why does this happen? it seems it only happens in windows environment because i believe the display drivers are being refreshed or something? during boot mode, it comes on instantly when you open the lid, but not in windows.

does anyone know the exact reason for this and is there a remedy?

it is very annoying when you are in the middle of work.

So are you in windows and it turns off or do you have the lid closed while in windows and when you open it back up it black?

when i close the lid and open it back up. the screen may not turn on or will flicker on / off and stay on, or on / off and remain off. i have to close the lid and re-open it again. this is my second 9860 because the first one died out on me, but they both expressed this symptom.

SOMEBODY!

at least tell me i am not the only one experiencing this crap!

Have you taken it apart to look for a loose connector between the screen and the motherboard? If its not under warranty any more thats where I'd start.

Dude you are not alone.

I have been seeing this since day one.. but it is minor irritation to me...

I have found that if I open the screen farther than normal it doesnn't seem to happen as often so maybe it has something to do with the sensor for the hibernate?? I am guessing really...

Also i Have noticed that when i come back from not using the computer sometimes it will not go off screen saver and i have to reboot.... again doesn't happen often.. but it does happen.

Let me know if you get something figured out.

its not just hibernate. it is basically closing and opening the lid. it only happens in windows environment (try it during the boot screen or in bios...never happens there).

so i dont know if it is a driver issue or if it only happens with nvidia cards or what.

hurricanesfan, do you have ati or nvidia??

nvidia G0 6800 not the Ultra

had that 3 or 4 times in the last 2 mth when booting, everything fine and once it should switch to windows i stare in disbelive at a black screen with mouse pointer. reboot and everything is normal. very strange, but as i said only had it 3 or 4 times within the last 2 mth. lately never again - if that was it, i can live with it - but one wonders.

Happens to me about once a week. If I leave the computer on and lower the lid when I come back and raise the screen it will, on occassion flicker and stay dark. If I close and reopen again it comes on normally. As others have said, a minor annoyance.

i have the 6800 gddr3 version.

i have a pet birds in my room sometimes so i make a habit of closing and opening the lid so none of them accidentally make a crash landing onto the monitor. but despite that, i do transport the laptop from office room to living room during use often-times.

I am almost 100% positive that it is the nVidia drivers, when I upgraded them to 79.31 The problem of having to re-open it appeared.

what drivers did you have before, JD?

i use 79.31 drivers also, but cant say from my experience that anything changed to better or worse since the update. so i dont really think its a driver issue.
