Good to hear of all the advancements, abf!

Seablade, even though the ATI drivers are binary, the kernel "hooks" must still be recompiled for every new kernel. I don't know the details, but thats what happens. Every time I upgrade my kernel, I have to recompile the ATI drivers, the Synaptics module and NDISWrapper, although I don't use it anymore.

Abf, the Gentoo base-layout includes a very convenient init script for setting up wireless. Basically, when you start your /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 (or whatever), it knows its a wireless device so it calls a special wireless script. It does things like scan the surroundings and figure out your preferred APs. Anyhow, the config is in /etc/conf.d/wireless and an examples is in /etc/init.d/wireless.example. I think there is a HOWTO on http://gentoo-wiki.com (very good resource). Browse around. Learning how to deal with all this via the console is extremely valuable; use GUI tools for convenience, but you should still be able to do things by hand if need be.

Finally, as for "post-install tweaking", enjoy yourself! I can honestly say that I didn't stop tweaking my Gentoo until at least a year after installing it.

That is what I was referencing with my statement, I wasnt sure if they COULD be recompiled or not.

If they can, have you done so since you recompiled your kernel last time ABF?

abf, that is for all cards. btw what kernel are you using? Make sure that when you built your kernel the radeon ati drivers and vesa are built as modules not builtin, there was another bug like that from what i remember

abf check out kde-apps.org. i personally use kwifimanager in suse, and it works fine.

there is also this one, http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=21832 , it appears to be better than kwifi but ive never used it before. id recommend trying wireless assitant first, and then going back to kwifimanager.

another thing, i assume you have kde 3.5 now. if not, you should, if so, download this, its great for notebooks. just make sure you have all the pyqt and pykde crap installed. http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=24626

might as well kill this thread.

after some thinking i made up my mind to kill Gentoo. I like it, but.... manual configuration and waiting for 5 hours for a program to install is simply not my cup of tea. so anywho.

as a tribute to all Suse users out there (and me being a constant suse flamer) i downloaded the 5 cds required for the OSS 10.0 x86 distro. anywho. toodles!

Heh, try "when it was still the 1.4 generation!"

...

Sad to see this happen, Abf.

i am on break right now with nothing better to do. plus i always had that feeling of failiure, for i have failed at gentoo every single time before. but i guess thats ok, no worries, life goes on.

as i write this i am installing the easy-going world of GUI tools and automatic everything. hahaha....good times.

You probably only forgot one line. After you define both input devices you need to configure the ServerLayout section to define one input device as your CorePointer, and one to SendCoreEvents. Here's mine;
