Portability and weight considerations?

Thread Starter
I will be traveling with my laptop everyday and am debating between a 15.4'' wide screen (e.g. Dell Inspiron 6000) or 14'' (e.g. Toshiba Satellite M50). This is totally a subjective question, but is a 6.6lb 15.4'' notebook noticably bulkier/heavier when traveling (vs. say a 5.4lb 14'')??? Does anyone travel with a 15.4'' laptop and have an opinion?

Thanks,
Brian

I take my 6.5-pound 15.4" to and from class every day. The weight really doesn't bother me at all, but I get the feeling that 6.5 pounds is probably around the upper limit before weight starts getting taxing. My last system weighed 8 pounds, and that was noticeably heavier to haul around.

So, what is your mode of travel ? Are you talking about carrying it, taking it in your car, on an airplane, Amtrak, the subway ?

in terms of physical size.. YES big difference between 15.4" and a 14" laptop, but in weight... i dunno, grab 2 text books each weghing 6.5lbs and 5.5lbs and see if theres a big difference.

Or like, carry one 6.5 lbs of the text book with ur normal stuff u take to school for a week.

then pick up the 5.5lbs text book and take out the 6.5lbs one and carry that with u for a week and see if there's a big difference.

Hope this helps.

I have a friend who wanted to get the lightest notebook he could find, it was a 14'.

I went ahead and got a 17' 7.5 lb sager. I carried both around for a day to feel the difference, and in my opinion i didnt feel a very big one. If you have built up a bit of muscle, its not a big difference at all. Bulky, slightly but then again that all depends on the users size and location. For me, the 17' 7.5 lbs feels light and not bulky, and im only 5'8. Then again its all on depends on the user.

Mystic made a good point, go to a place that has laptops and feel the difference to see how it fits to YOU. Every persons opinion will be different, since we are all physically different.

Good luck

Same here, RW. I carry my 8.3 pound XPS2 everywhere with me and it's seriously never been a weight problem unless I have 3 other textbooks with me. The amusing thing is that people complain about a laptop's weight and then carry college-sized textbooks around like they're nothing! Two textbooks are a lot more cumbersome than even a 17" lappy like the XPS2.

In short, it doesn't bother me at all. I'm 5'9", 163 pounds.
