Ya but the problem is everyone running those scams has 100% Feedback...because they stole the Ebay account. So lame.

So can you give us a bit of a Sager vs Alienware with the two models you have? I'm darn temped to pickup a Sager from PC Torque.

Brian,

keep your eye on this auction. It seems to be legit.

What kind of Scams are people pulling on Ebay with Alienwares'?
It is no secret that there are all kinds of ways people are stealing account names and passwords. I will not go into the many methods but I'm sure you can surmise a few for yourself.

What people are doing is, basically, saying they have Area51m's at huge discounts from business liquidations, botched importing processes, ect...

Bottom line...there is no other way to get an Alienware laptop that is new other than from Alienware. They do not use reselllers.

You will be able to spot these scammers by the fact they usually take wire transfers or other immediate forms of payment only. Also check their recent auctions. If you see someone that has been selling/buying doll house furniture for the last two years and they suddenly have access to Area51m's for $1000USD, then they've stolen that persons account and are using the feedback rating to get people comfortable with sending funds. SCAM.

Craig

I am already watching that one , that other one is a total scam

Craig ya know where I saw the biggest scams on Ebay? Ive been looking around at large screen NEC LCD's and the prices are so low ya know its a scam. But your right the feedback is real high. I also notice a scam they do is sell a bunch of crap under 10 bucks to get positive feedback then sell large price items all at once. Its obvious when you look at their history.

Brian most people would rather spend the extra money and get a new cpu. If you sell it I bet it will be closer to half the value you purchased it for.

Heh....if it goes that low...I'll buy it Brian

No, he'll probably make out ok. What would be great is if someone in your area could actually come by and check it out...then you'd surely get your money out of it.

Long-time lurker here coming out of the woodwork. Been browsing the side since early Fall, debating whether or not to pick up an Alienware. The cost had been a factor, but the specs were a big selling point. Since the price jump, I've left Alienware out of the picture and had been looking at Sagers and even Toshibas (altho' their graphic card offerings are rather slim )

I'd kept this post in mind and am sorely tempted to make an offer. It just seems too good to be true.

I'm wondering, what sort of deal did you have in mind? Here, I'm an unknown, having lurked only and not posted at all before now (but I do have references- http://heatware.com/eval.php?id=520 & http://cgi2.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAP...rid=friedtoast ) My question is how would you propose the trade? $2500 + shipping is a lot of money. And while I've bought the current laptop I'm using online, it was off the Anandtech forums with an established trader with a record (Heatware and eBay feedback). Here, I don't know anyone, so I'm somewhat leery of sending out $2500 to someone I don't know. I'm not saying that you're a bad person (if I thought so, I wouldn't bother ) But it *is* the internet, and being as such, I don't trust anyone at first.

If your Area 51-m is still available, I'm interested. But before I look further into ways of putting together the money, I wanted to check out what sort of plan you had for the transaction.

Heckuva first post But now that I finally registered (had a bit of a problem awhile back trying to register as my provider'd been black-listed by the forums), hopefully I'll be around a bit more and *hopefully* be one of the few, the proud, the Alienware owners

I was wondering about this, too. Just wondering why you ended up buying 2 laptops (esp. when both are high-end).

Also, I was wondering if it had XP Pro or Home installed on it?

Do you have any pics of it?

i forget what the term is, but there's a service you can pay for so that he sends the laptop to a third party and you send the money to the 3rd party so that there is no backstabbing. help...its 2 am.

Escrow service is the term you're looking for

I've personally never used one, and I've heard of plenty of scams involving them, so I don't even know which ones would be trustworthy I've taken a few hits online (once on eBay and on Anandtech), so I'm suitably a bit more leery now.

Guess it's time to start doing research

Edit: Good escrow info HERE for anyone wondering. In the past, most of my online deals were fairly small, so I never looked into escrow. When I bought my current laptop (Sony VAIO PIII 700) a few years ago, I was in a hurry before a cross-country trip, so I didn't take the time to be careful (luckily, ended up ok).

Also, WHY I'm leery (besides having been taken previously).

And Another site w/ information re: escrows.

To anyone that is interested in the area 51m2 I will post some more pics later today. as for the condition it is perfect in every way no marks scratchs or anything screen is perfect no dead or stuck pixels, and everything works.
as for payment bank check money order or [paypal plus 3% if used ] I know how people can feel with a large purchase over the internet. I purchased a toshiba laptop and lost $800.00 on ebay , but that was partialy my fault the add said
that he had more and to email him [1st mistake] which I did, he said to send funds through western union [2nd mistake] after he recieved the funds all emails stopped and the auction on ebay was canceled. If I had just bid on it and won the auction I would have had some protection through ebay but I did not, I filed a fraud reports with western union, ebay, FBI Police dept in the town he was from and everyone else I could think of. so even now I still do buy things and sell on ebay but I am alot more careful. my user name ia brileavi and anyone can check my feedback I have bought and sold almost 100 times. the reason I am selling it is because I have a 8890 orderd and can not keep both, I need the DB9 port and some other features which this does not have . I just hope I am making the right move, that is why I have not put it on ebay yet I would like to see the other one first.
