Kool-aid spill....help!

So, I was drinking kool-aid and was an idiot and set it in front of my 9300. Knocked it over, and it spilled all over the keyboard. I instantly turned my PC upside-down, pulled the plug and removed the battery, then proceeded to let as much kool-aid as possible drip out of the keyboard. I removed the keyboard, and opened the case. After seeing a small bit of liquid had gotten in between the keyboard and a couple parts (thankfully there was none on any circuitry) I let it dry out for about an hour just in case. In the meantime, I poured alcohol on the keyboard (to get rid of the kool-aid stickiness), rinsed it off, and then used a blow-dryer to dry it off. Next, I tried turning the computer on without the keyboard plugged in.

It worked, so I plugged the keyboard in and again, it worked fine. I continued watching the movie I'd been watching before I hibernated my PC (it must have finished hibernating before I pulled out the battery), strange things started happening. Random keyboard keys started pressing. At first it was just the start menu going up and down, but then it spread to other keys. I restarted my computer, except the problem was still there. I decided my keyboard probably needed to dry a little more, however, while all these keys are being randomly triggered, the Fn+Suspend key gets hit.

When i turn my PC back on, it says there's a problem with my AC adaptor (which didnt get any liquid on it.) I was like, alright, whatever, but since the keyboard wasn't working I couldn't bypass the message, so I just unplugged the adaptor and restarted. Then my computer would only start to Dell MediaDirect, for whatever reason. After that, it would start to some Factory Mode or something and prompted me to press Fn+X to switch back into normal mode. I attempted this, but to no avail, either because of the keyboard or my computer. Now the amber battery light only comes on when I press the switch to turn my computer on; occasionally it'll boot up to the Fn+X prompt, but its pretty inconsistent.

Does anybody know what I should try to fix this? I don't have CompleteCare, or else I would just deal with it through that. Any idea what specific part might be causing this, or what course of action I should take?

Finally, if you're going to post just to tell me I'm an idiot without giving any advice/insight, please don't bother. I already understand the fact that spilling kool-aid was stupid and rinsing the keyboard with alcohol and blow drying might not have been the best course of action, but whatever, the damage is done (if there is any). Thanks...

UPDATE: Okay, so after I typed that post, I turned on my PC, and, lo and behold, it started. I plugged in my keyboard, and I was able to hit F1 to continue (i had reset the CMOS.) Windows started, but I still got the AC adaptor warning message beforehand. My keyboard still doesn't type right, but I'm going to leave everything overnight to see if it gets any better. Any other reccommendations?

I wonder if you could unplug the 9300 keyboard from its little socket and use a usb keyboard or something of that nature. You know, like a bypass with an external USB board until you can get a new one in. You might not even have to unplug the internal board. Sorry bout your luck man. Just out of curiosity, what flavor lol

I would give it at least 24hrs before starting it. I know its hard, but things need to get dried up. I once dropped my cellphone in a glass of water, and after 24hrs it was fine, but even after 6 or 8 it would not boot.

Try to be patient, I know it sucks.

You did the right thing with washign the keyboard although I'd have rinsed it under Hot water to clean the kool-aid off and then used the alcohol to clean off any residue left over and air dried over night. I've dont this to a number of KBs over the years and all have worked fine the next day.

I just spilled gatorade on mine recently (lemon lime, i know, flavor askers are NOT funny, lol). I do not have AccidentalCoverage. I let it dry for 24 hours over a heater while it was standing horizontally. I did this after turning it on and it had went nuts. After 24 hours, it still did very strange things like different keys being pressed when I clearly did not. After a week, it worked itself out. It works fine now; very strange. Best of luck to your machine. Give it time. The only reason I gave it time without freaking was that I thought I had the full warranty. I did not, but it all worked itself out after a week. Best of luck.

I've spilt tea on keyboard before and found it dissolved some of the wires connecting the keys. I also know in nokia phones the on switch corrodes when it gets wet and often needs careful cleaning. With any luck you haven't busted your laptop, perhaps just the keyboard, although hopefully it will dry out and be ok...

You did the right thing, my mate spilt port on his laptop the other day and left it until it was dripping out all the sockets.. it doesn't work anymore

i wish these laptops were water/bullet proof

Yes, if you do spill something wet in your keyboard and clean and dry it. Do not turn it back on for at least 24 hours if not a bit longer. No reason to rush as you can't see if you really have it all dried out.

I guess these are the times you kick yourself for not paying a little extra and getting the CompleteCare coverage on your laptop. If you had that then you could just contact Dell and get your parts replaced or a new laptop i'm guessing.

What kool-aid flavor?

If you have gotten rid of all the evidence of a spill, then just call dell and say your laptop is not working. They are not going to nitpick at the component level. Due to the large number of laptops they have to fix, they are just going to find out what's not working, replace it and get it out the door as soon as possible. Time is money.

Ofcourse this is just an option for you that I don't necessarily condone.

lol should have got complete care,

and they'll know you can never clean kool aid up so they dont

I said I don't necessarily condone it. Besides, in this particular case I feel I am not competant enough to know the difference between right and wrong. At least, that's what they said on Law and Order the other day.

Just BUY a new keyboard, they are like $14 from Spare Parts.

And I thought I was bad for leaving my laptop on the patio for five minutes, coming back to find ants going at it! They were entering by the HD bay, but they left (all of them I believe ). I'm always careful not to keep any glasses of liquids by my laptop. A friend of mine was spilled vodka at a party that seeped quickly under his HP, but he moved fast as I watched in horror. Nothing happened.

Yeah, I have to call dell spare parts and get a new keyboard. I poured alcohol on mine to clean it and it still sticks, very annoying. You can get the phone number off of the first post in the thread about getting the new 7000 series GPU for cheap.
