Laptop Resolution and Monitor Resolution

I would post this question in the Asus forum but I think I have a better in chance in general. I have an Asus Z71v and screen Resolution is 1680x1050, I am getting a larger external monitor to hook up to my laptop.
1) I have a VGA output, is there anything I can do to hook up the 30inch Apple Cinema Display to my laptop? it uses a Dual Link DVI connector. I know theres converters but the resolution on the monitor is 2560 x 1600 and I don't know if the video card can handle that.
2) Does it matter if the monitor I get has a higher resolution?
I do alot of graphic design so I need anyone with experienc eto help me thank you.

the card should handle it, the 6600 is a capable card.

in terms of cables, can't help you.

in terms of resolution? will you be dual-screening or just single screen on teh display?

if single, you'll have no problems running in it's native res.
if double, ugh...things will get messy.

Yes it will be single monitor. So if i buy the 30 ACD and a converter like this one

it should run at high res in the monitor?
Thank You

To see what resolutions your card can work with an external monitor, open Display Properties -> Settings, click on monitor 2, and slide the resolution slider all the way to More.

I think my configuration for my video card is different. When I check the second display it says 1024x768. I know for a fact this video card handles a lot more than that. How come the powerbooks can handle it with lowers resolutions.
