Annoying (echo?) in modem sound?

I just got my new 8886 yesterday. This thing is a monster! I like it! I have noticed one annoying thing that I hope I can fix. When I dial up, the sound of the dialing that is coming through my speakers seems to echo, or have double sound. It sounds like two modems dialing up and connecting at the same time, except they're about a half second off from each other. It sounds really annoying.

Is there anything I can do or what? Please help me out, someone.

lol, this is just a guess, but I think you don't have your microphone muted. Thus, it is detecting the sound and putting it back out again... So, you can try this... Go to your volume settings, which should be the little speaker on the bottom right side of the screen. If you double click on that, it will bring up the various volume controls. Find "microphone" and click the box that says "muted" if it isn't already. If it is, then there's some other problem. If you click it and the problem remains, then obviously it isn't the solution. But, you should keep your mic muted at all times anyway so that music and other sounds don't get recycled and feedback doesn't develop. (Also, when your mic is muted, it is still detecting sound, it just doesn't put it back out through the speakers... so even if you use your mic, you should keep it muted.) Hope that helps!

I figured it out! It wasn't my mic. After making sure my mic was indeed muted, I made a call to tech support and left my name & number. As I was waiting for a return call, I kept fiddling and looking through my audio and modem settings. I finally found the annoying culprit.

In the control panel, under modem settings, under the speaker tab, I found [soft speaker] was enabled. I disabled it by unchecking the box and voila! (note: you have to have your modem disconnected to toggle this feature) If anyone wants an annoying dial-up sound, enable the soft speaker.
