Quake 4 Dual-Core Performance

Somewhat off topic (since the current XPS and i9300 are obviously single core), but since the i9400 and the next XPS are almost certainly going to be powered by the dual-core Yohah (Or I guess "Core Duo"), this is relevant to those considering whether to buy now or wait for Yonah/Merom.

The Quake 4 dual-core patch looks amazing (and actually seems to offer gains near the 87 percent quoted by id). Hopefully more games will gain similar dual-core support (the only other one mentioned in the article is Call of Duty 2)

What sucks is that the game runs fine before the patch

Huh? What is wrong with that? (Unless if there is some sarcasm I'm not reading...)

I'd think good performance before and patch and improved performance for dual-core systems after the patch could only be a good thing...

The game ran at 60FPS all the time before. Sure it's better but the game is capped.

Hence you won't notice the difference.

True, but your system and the systems they tested are significantly more powerful than the average system (or the average dual-core system)

That is true..... I dunno this whole dual core thing isn't proving much performace gains *at resolutions we play at* like 1280x1024.

CoD2 just recieved a dual core patch. There is a 1fps gain at 1280x1024, nothing to brag about.

I'd rather just get a faster single core CPU that will overclock higher then my X2.

I'm starting to wonder if returing my 2.2GHz Opteron 148 was a bad idea, those pupples can hit about 2.8 - 2.9GHz on basically stock voltages. Never did get to try that CPU Maybe i'll order another one in the coming weeks.

i saw some benchmarks from Yonah DC linked from Theinquirer.net. They are 1-2 FPS lower than Dothan's as far as game performance goes.

In games that are not optimized for dual-core, Yonah is (very slightly) slower than Dothan. I would assume, however, that in games optimized for dual-core Yonah would be faster.

Where did you read that they're going to release an Inspiron or XPS mobile with a Yonah? Everything I've found has said they'll skip it and wait for 64 bit dual core solutions.

It's not a confirmation, of course, but seeing how close Dell and Intel are I'd be surprised if Dell didn't come out with a Yonah-based notebook.

Are you kidding?!?! DELL will certainly be adopting Yonah in very short order. They would be crazy not to as it would put them at a disadvantage to manufactures who did come out with Yonah based notebooks. If anything they will probably be one of the quickest to bring them to market due to their build to order model.

As a side note I talked to a DELL rep at one of those kiosks in a local mall and asked him what happens to the M170 when Yonah debuts. He said Yonah will become an option for it (as opposed to a new model being released). Of course I am not sure how much faith to put into this comment, but I thought it was interesting never the less.

The Yonah has so far (from the docs shown on places like the inquirer) only been confirmed as a business cpu option for Dell laptops. I would believe that Dell is going to wise up and not do another generation until the 64-bit cpu's are available in mobile capacity. As there is lil difference in performance for gaming or everyday computing outside of business applications, Dell would not find it a useless spending of cash to purchase another mobo solution and pay Foxconn for it's development for the 17" chassis. Currently Dell is still trying to figure out if they want to upgrade to a 19" or 20" laptop chassis to hold the latest and greatest in mobile LCD's from LG and Samsung.
