Who makes a screen comparable / better than sony XBRITE?

I just ordered a Dell Inspiron 6000 with WSXGA+ screen. Well, to say I am disappointed is an understatement. Viewing angles, backlight bleeding, brightness....all subpar.

And to top it off, i just sat it down right next to a Sony Vaio (almost 2 years old) with XBRITE. I wanted to throw the dell in the garbage. The sony blew it away.

So now I ask the experts..... who makes a screen comparable or better than Sony XBRITE? I took a glance at the thinkpad site, in which the best i could find was WSXGA+ (which now seems like its not good enough for me).

In my opinion, Fujitsu is awesome!!! By the way, the screen on your 6000 is matte finished & not glossy so it might not be fair to compare the screen on your Dell 6000 to your Sony XBrite.

I dont even care for a glossy finish. I do care about brightness, viewing angle, and clarity of pixels. Out of all of these things, viewing angle is the most important. Check out these pics:

In this one you can see that even straight in front of the screen, there is a "tunnel vision" effect where only the middle is bright. This is the biggest turn off.

In this one, you can see how much backlight bleeding there is on the bottom:

I'm not sure whether you know this but buying a Dell lappy requires much patience because certain Dell models have some problems/issues with light leakage & if you look around the Dell section of this forum, you'll find quite a few threads about the LCD screens... But if your 6000 is still within 21 days of your purchase & you're not satisfied, just return it & find another one that you like. Good luck.

A new one is already on the way. But even if the backlight is fixed, the brightness and tunnel effect is likely a shortcoming of the model, not necessarily a defect in mine.

Right now, I'm considering selling the sealed replacement, returning this POS, and buying a different brand... The thinkpad was my first choice before i bought the dell. Now that I am reconsidering, all i see is WSXGA+ on their site and I'm not going to pay a premium of $500 if the screen is not considerably better.

Toshiba/Fujitsu. Same answer in all these threads.

I wish people used SEARCH.

Then you should care about gloss, it not only intensifies the colours but also helps with viewing angles and clarity.

but at the cost that the screen is very reflective and I couldn't use one because of the lighting in my office would bake it a pain to see the screen.

I've not had such a problem in my hallogen-lit classrooms, at all.

Have you tried a laptop in that environment w/ a glossy screen?

The results might be more to your liking than you think, but I don't know the place so I can't say for sure.

any one with openion on the LG lw70 17" screen? is it any good compared to the sony's

I guess I never heard a clear answer to this. I just bought a Dell Latitude 610. I'm very pleased with the build quality (rock solid), but the screen is leaving me a bit empty. It's fine, I guess, no major problems, but I can't get those sexy Sony screens out of my head. And this one wrinkles very easily at the slightest touch, which makes me worry about its long term viability.

I did like the screen on the 700m a lot, but that machine doesn't come with bluetooth, and I'm not going to have any more dongles hanging out of my laptop. I was stoked about the 630m, but then I heard negatives about its screen not measuring up to the 700.

I still have time to return the D610 if I could find something similar with a great screen. Any ideas?

So do I. This LG is awesome. Great color, brightness, viewing angles and no light leaks.

How do you know which models use the LG screen?

Is the LW70 screen really that good??

I'll probably get an LW75 (I'm guessing it has the same specs as the LW70 apart from the graphics card and the hard drive) soon but I have to order it online and it feels a bit risky buying it without looking at the screen first.

After searching the web for while i've discovered that most people seems to like the screen very much, but is it really that good?? The backlight is only 200 nits, isn't that pretty weak?? I thought most notebooks had at least 250 nits. I think the Sony XBRITE has 400 and there's an Acer (model: 9502WSMI) that has 500 nits(!).

Speaking of Acer 9502WSMI... has anyone seen this notebook? At first I was thinking of buying it instead of the LW75 since it's both cheaper and has brighter backlight, but it seems like not a single person in the whole damn world owns one! I've been searching the web for hours... there are no reviews, no forum posts, NOTHING! If anyone owns an Acer 9502WSMI or have seen one in store, PLEASE E-MAIL ME! I'd really appreciate it.

How does one find out the nits for a laptop? It is usually under the specs? Would make my decision of my next purchase a lot easier.

I believe Asus v6va has one of the best screen, if not the best. The sad thing is no other notebook implements IPS which makes viewing angles unbeliveable (more or less 180 degrees both horizontal and vertical). I have used Sony Xbrite and this screen is better.

Sony does not make LCD. Most of LCDs Sony uses come from Samsung, more exactly speaking through S-LCD (a company owned by Samsung with Sony investment).
