horizontal lines on LCD screen

Thread Starter
I have an HP Pavilion XH485 laptop and the screen is showing a large number of coloured horizontal lines (most are red) making it impossible to use.

Up to a certain time ago, the screen would show a correct display at a certain angle (i.e. when it is opened at a certain angle) but at different angles, it would only show a bunch of lines.

Now, that has stopped as well - and all i see are a bunch of horizontal coloured lines.

The lines positions change - they are not fixed at a certain screen position.

What could this be?

That would be the ribbon cable that goes from the motherboard connector to the lcd. It runs up through one of the hinges and will eventualy break from opening and closing the lid. It's the same machine as an Omnibook XE3. Generaly this isn't a user replaceable part. It requires replaceing the entire LCD assembly. Usualy makes the laptop not worth fixing. I checked hp pricing it's any where from 450 exchange to 1400 outright depending on sixe and color of plastics.

Ribbon Cable

Isnt there any way to check that ribbon cable?

Also, I noticed that the LCD assembly unit is a LP150X1 (from LG Philips). I noticed that other laptops (e.g. Gateway) use the same 15" LP150X1 LCD unit. This should work in my case as well, right?

Thanks.

Yeah you can tear into it and check the cables. THe display panel it self is the same but the cabling may be diferent.

Some Updates

Excuse my ignorance but ...
if the panel is the same ... the cable connecting it to the main laptop unit should have the same pin structure, right?

So it should work! What do you mean by 'cabling might be different' - what cabling?

Also, I noticed that if I nearly close the LCD (i.e. at a very low angle before closing it) the LCD displays everything correctly, but once I open the laptop completely, I start seeing a bunch of coloured lines.

Thanks.

Each manufacturer uses different layouts on the mobo. Even different cards. The LCD is standard but harldy nothing else is. Hell I've even seen them change the cbles on the same make and model of laptop. Just depends on where the parts are sourced from. Sometimes it's a flat/ribbon cable, other times it's a real wire cable.

Managed half-way

I just managed to fix the LCD Data Cable.

Unfortunately, I cannot get the LCD Bulb Cable (which is attached to the Inverter) to work.

Do inverters usually come equipped with a cable or not?

Thank you.

What do you mean it doesn't work? No light does it flicker what? No usualy when you order an inverter from the manufaturer (HP) you get just the inverter. The cables are seperate Items, let me clarify, the cable from inverter to LCD is built into the backlight assembly of the LCD. THe cable from INverter to Mobo is another data cable. Before you get too crazy on it make sure the lid switch did not get stuck down while putting the top cover back in place. I can't get part numbers for the individual cables. HP won't release them to me.

Right now, the backlight is not working. I can see the graphics but very very dimly. The cable from inverter to LCD is ok, but the cable from inverter to MoBo is damaged and I need to replace that.

Unfortunately, as you already said, HP won't release these part numbers. I'm pretty sure both the cable and inverter are the cause.

Have you got any other ideas?

Thanks.

If it's just a broken trace on the ribbon cable you may try a trace pen to fix it. Otherwise go gheto on it and build your own cable. I've had to do that before.

It's not the ribbon cable. It's the cable that connects the MoBo to the inverter. I managed to fix the other one, but I need a new set of plugs for the cable because I cannot use the old ones.

These are 6-pin plugs that connect the inverter to the mobo. How can I get hold of such plugs? Any good online store?

Thanks

Maybe radio shack but more likely a Grainger or the like.
