want to install os X

Thread Starter
I just got an old imac which currently has operating system os/9 and os/x on it. It didn't come with any restore/os discs. What I want to do is buy a new HDD and install a fresh copy of os/X on it. I'm goning to purchase the discs on ebay.

Does the disc have to be a full version of os/x or do I have to install os/9 then upgrade? Also can I use any HDD out there or does it have to be an "apple" hdd. Also any links on "how to's" would help, thanks.

each copy of OS X is a full install. no BS segmentation like dealing w/ windows. "apple" HDs are those from any maker which happens to have an apple symbol stamped onto it as well, so yes, u can use any drive that meets the phsyical specs of the one u r replacing. i.e.- 3.5"

old imac? which one? bubble imac? E.T. imac?
