Noice comparison: Thinkpad T42 (UC2M1GE) vs. Asus 91M67N

Hallo,

I've bought for a time ago an IBM Thinkpad T42 (UC2M1GE). A main reason for buying this notebook was the high quality way of construction, e.g. the keyboard. Another reason was the silent noice of the notebook. The only audible - bothering - noice was the HDD noice from the bottom right corner. After talking to some people I get the explanation for this noice: it depends on the relative 'bad' construction of the HDD bay. Also exchanging the origin HDD for e.g. a Fujitsu HDD don't solve this noicy problem.

Now I have worked for a short time with a ASUS notebook. And what shell I say: I can't believe my ears. You hear absolutly nothing, nothing. But I have to remark, that I wouldn't give up my Thinkpad, it's amazing. If Î only could get rid of the bothering HDD noice.

Any explanation why the ASUS notebook is in comparison to the Thinkpad so silent, really silent?

Most harddrive noise has nothing to do with the laptop; it depends on the brand and speed of the harddrive itself. Some brands' drives are very loud, while others are much quieter. Also, the faster the hdd (ie 4200rpm vs 5400rpm vs 7200rpm), the more noise it makes as it spins up. The capacity might make a difference, I don't know.

So, I think you would have to use the same brand and speed harddrive in each to fairly compare the noise. I don't know about the drive bay design and how it affects your ability to hear the harddrive, that might be playing a part. I think you should look at the drives themselves first, though.

It's noise by the way.

As mentioned what hard drives are in the laptops? My T43p has a 7200rpm 60gb drive. The only noise I hear from it is a bit of chatter when it's accessing data.

Your laptop might have a noisier make of drive, and it might be faster than the drive in the Asus. If it bothers you then you can always look up the quietest hard drive and then get one of those. Hard drive noise is beyond IBMs control.
