Is it possible to track a lost laptop? Does Dell have anything incorporated into their system(either software or hardware) that could track it? I mean at least being able to tell the ip address of the person using it or if it's in use.

I lost mine yesterday and I know to recovery it are slim. I had a 700m

ok, got it, but I don't think it applies to my laptop.

So, still trying to figure out if Dell has anything incorporated that could track them down when they access the internet. Anybody with similar experiences?

no i dont think so. the ip address changes when you use different ISPs. the only way maybe is if you have your MAC address from the laptop and call different ISPs in your area and try to get some info from them which is unlikely

yeah I know that, but I hoped that Dell has some something integrated that would trigger itself when that particular Service Tag it's online and it has been declared stolen to them.

Not likely, but you can still report it stolen so any service request is denied.

why would they not just accept the service request when they know its stolen and then ask the person for proof of purchase once the laptop is in their hands..if they dont have any then ship it back to the owner that reported it stolen...

something along those lines?..

I agree with you. It has been declared stolen to them, but the chances that the person who stole it will call in for service are minimal, that's why I was asking if there is any other way they can find it.

I should've installed Computrace, but too late now
