9600 Pro => 6800XT upgrade issues

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
I just upgraded a PC w/ a A-XP 3000+, 1GB RAM, and 9600 Pro 128MB to a 6800XT to play BF2:SF, AoEIII, and a few others at higher frames/settings. The only problem is there seems to be no or little performance increase. I uninstalled all of the Ogemga ATI drivers and tools before installing the 6800XT and installed the 81.98 NVIDIA drivers and Coolbits. I ran 3DMark05 and got 852. I should be getting ~3300. I am running at the stock clocks and 8x mode is enabled in the bios. Detecting optimal frequencies for the video card clocks and running 3DMark05 adds about about 50 points. Something is wrong here and I can't figure out what.

Umm Not to be an ass but you did plug in the card power didn't you? I forgot once and it would draw the desktop but not much else. I have pretty much the same system as you. 3000+ Barton at 2.5G 1G ram and a BFG 6800OC. I haven't ran 3dmark or anything but it will do HL2 at 16x12 no problems. Also check the AA and AF settings. That can bring a card to it's knees.
I can install 3dmark for comparrison if you want.

The power cable is plugged in. But I did forget to do that one time on another PC.

No AA/AF was on and I was using the same video settings as on the 9600 Pro. After uninstalling the drivers and using Driver Cleaner in safe mode and reinstalling the drivers with no luck, I decided to reformat and reinstall Windows. It's not done yet, but hopefully this will work.

Ok let me know if you want me run some tests on my machine.

Just to let you know, the 6800XT is only 8 pipelines, since it is clocked lower. So bsmith, comparing the 6800OC (12 pipes) to the 6800XT won't do you much good. I am guessing that the 6800XT should still get 3d mark05 scores around 3000+.

@Jordan - if it doesn't end up working after the reformat, I would say you have a bad video card or something. In that case, I would RMA it for a new one. Did you check to make sure that the fan was working?

That just goes to show you how long I've been out of circulation.

Reformatted and reinstalled XP and installed audio, network, and the 81.98 drivers, ran 3DMark05....862 points. The fan is definitely working.

You're probably right pyro, at this point I should RMA it back to Newegg, unless I or anyone else thinks of something.

What about chipset drivers? Do AMD computers need those? I know the Intel-chipset based mobo I have in the desktop needs mobo drivers to work optimally.

I'm pretty sure they don't.

Maybe so...

I just installed everything in "NVIDIA_NF2_114_WINXP.EXE" under "Chipset" (nVIDIA NFORCE2 Chipset Driver (Audio, LAN, AGP, SMBus, Memory Controller, IDE) here http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdownloa...el=m7ncd+ultra and scored a 2624 in 3DMark05! I was expecting for 3000-3300 but there definitely is a performance increase in BF2 over the 9600 Pro.

Pushed it up past 3200 with some OCing.
