New MJ-12® m5500i and m5700i

Great - here I've been quietly planning on buying the M5500 notebook, though I've been waiting to see some user reviews first. Now I go to the Alienware website and I see a new 15.4" notebook. It touts an extra hour of battery life over the 5500 but I really can't see the differences once I start digging into the configuration area. What's so special about the MJ-12 5500s over the regular Area 51 5500 units?

Graphics package.

Maybe MJ stands for "more juice".

Oh crap, maybe it stands for Michael Jackson!

What kind of graphics package? Don't they both use the gforce 6600?

The M5500i under tech specs tab says MXM2 architecture whatever that means. Kind of confusing but the i model is $500.00 more expensive.

The MJ12 is a Professional system. I havent looked at the new releases yet but the MJ12 has always been know for its super high performance in 3D work.

Thanks for the clarification Aurora

MXM is graphics from Nvidia. Sorta like PCMIA cards, pull em out and slide a new one in.

They usually have an option for the nVidia Quadro cards and are lab tested to match components for the highest pro/e performance. usually above and beyond most all other machines that are designed for this type of work.

Sounds nice - I plan on ordering one of the M5500 next week. I hope that more comes out on this one.

Thanks for the help.

configuration package is different.. other wise the MJ12 and the previous AW model are the same Uniwill 259EN3 unit.

New MJ-12® m5500i and m5700i

I was about to pull the trigger on an Area-51 m5500 when I ran into these new laptops. Does anyone have any details on these? Hmmm, I think I should be glad I waited until after the holiday.

So far, after a quick comparison of the MJ-12 m5500i to the Area-51 m5500

Longer battery life 4 instead of 3 Hrs
1.36" thick instead of 1.4"
There is no option for MCE with the MJ-12
NVIDIA MXM2 Graphics Architecture (I thought the Area-51 m5500 also had this)

The MJ-12 just comes with more options stock....when you configure an Area 51-m the same way as a MJ-12 the only difference is about $100 for the same computer.

StuckUp, what the heck did you do to get the full red negative reputation bar? Did you get your system yet?

The Majestic 12 is a Professional system. The options that are available cater to people that work professionally with 3D programs. These are generally portable workstations with the power needed to meet the higher standards that are required for specialized programs. You can build one of these for gaming and normal use. The MJ12 release is usually followed by detailed information including application scores that professionals use to determine the performance level of the machine compared to others in the same class.

The 259EN3 model shows that it can run with the instant-on media software, so does anyone who has any of the 5500 notebooks had any luck with this?

I need to buy one this week, I have to before the end of the year for tax reasons. I was pretty much set on the m5500 (I can't do the 17" screen models, way too big) but then the m5500i came along! Ack!
