Why the 1 hour difference in battery life?

That's exactly the same question I asked myself. Also, why is there a difference in thicknes in the two models? 1.36" for the MJ vs 1.4" for the Area-51 (as per the Alienware site). I have to buy a laptop by 12/31. If someone can point me to an official source that verifies that the the Area-51 m5500 "hardware" is the same as the MJ-12 m5500i and that the only difference is the software/hardware options selected during the online configuration, I'll buy Area-51 m5500 tomorrow.

I posted a thread talking about the lack of customer service AW was providing me and the fact that out of 10 times I called AW in my life only one spoke decent english, the rest I couldnt understand. So people on this board flipped the **** out.

Hey man,
Ive got a mj12 (7700) for pro-usage. As said here, the more important factor is the graphics card (FX go). These cards are certified by major cad program suppliers like PTC (Pro engineer), Unigraphics, Catia etc. Furthermore these cards can cut the workload of high end rendering of cad models etc. The MJ systems are truly a desktop workstation replacement. Yep battery life is about one hour. When its on battery it also bites a big chunk of the performance, so its wisely to have two adaptors (like one at work & one at home). Downside is that these cards are usualy not that good for gaming (although the fx go 1400 can stand its own in BF2). The software suppliers are also a bit slow to certify new drivers, so your always running a couple of months behind which is not optimal for gaming .

Dojo, the MJ12 needed a Pro user to clarify things. Thanks.
if you need help with the ear plug issue
send a message to Alienware-Steve he will help you out.

Cheers Aurora. The bios update did solve the issue :-)

If you have specific questions about the different models, call the sales number and ask.

I called and chatted with a couple of support folks (Jose and Armando) and was told that there is a new motherboard rev/design in the MJ to support the Quadro card. Maybe they don't have all the facts, but that's what I was told made the difference in thickness and battery life. They also said that MCE is not a supported platform on the MJ, but that it was just as good for gaming as the Area-51.

I'm in a bit hesitant now as they said that this was a new motherboard rev with better battery life. I don't want to pull the trigger and find that next week the new rev has made it to the Area-51 series.

I'll sleep on it and will probably buy the Area-51 as I think that having a thicker case might allow for better air flow... Just me speculating here.

okay my 2 cents:

m5500j - 9cell battery standard
WinXP Pro
maybe else something stupid

m5500 - 6cell battery standard
WinMCE

both - everything but 1.36 thickness rounds up to 1.4, no?
both have MXM2
both come w/ same software installed

i think the m5500j was made to charge professionals a lil something extra, that is all...

I couldn't find any where in the AW site where it specifically said that the MJ had a 9 cell battery. It would make sense, but the 9 cell battery actually appears as an "option" under configuration. Go figure!

Well, never mind about the MJ... I pulled the trigger on the Area-51 m5500. I'm in phase 3 with a tentative delivery of Jan 9th. Got the Pentium M 760 and the 256MB Nvidia, but only one 256MB stick of RAM. I read somewhere in this forum that I can get Kingston RAM for this laptop from newegg.com at better price than what's offered by AW. Can someone point me to where I read this. I can't find the post and the search engine for the forum is not working. I'm interested in two 1GB sticks for a total of 2GB to get the two channels going. Now if someone can tell me exactly which model Kinston 1GB RAM I should get or give me any RAM recommendations for the m5500, I'd be very greatful.

Thanks...

Happy New Year to all!

EDIT: Is this the RAM DIMM I should get? KVR533D2S4/1G Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)

Thats what I did I bought my m5500 with 256 and ordered the same the memory from newegg.....shit works great.......and yes that is the model number. On a side note when I go to My Alienware PC Information page it says "256mb PC2-4300 266mhz" is this the same thing as PC-4200 533mhz its supposed to come with? Or is ddr2 memory really 266mhz per stick and when you run in dual channel it makes it 533?

Refer to post # 26 For more information regarding the reliance that professionals have on the certification of the equipement. These components are tested to ensure compatibility and the highest performance in several environments used by professionals in the high-end content creation field. Once there are professional reviews done on the new MJ12 there will be more info for people to consider. Reviews for the MJ12 usually include multiple benchmarks and application scores. If a person does not require a true workstation then it would be a good idea to get an Area 51m

Thanks for the info on the memory... that saves me a few bucks.

Well, even with all the chatter about the MJ-12 being nothing more than a "gotcha", I went ahead and just pulled the pin on one. They gave me 512 of memory (256 x 2) for the same price as just 256 as it was a free upgrade.

Once I get it I'll do the newegg thing and upgrade the memory... and probably sell the old stuff on eBay or something like that.

Estimated delivery Jan 9th. I'll run any and all benchmarks requested though I need to know what programs you guys use.

I think the alien part was just a scenario to determine a way to create a new world order. It was definately way before Roswell. The scenario could be anything that could be used to cause a world chaos and a need for world government, ie: terrorism. There is a lot of info about this stuff. Its also called MAJESTYTWELVE (no spaces), Operation Majority, Project Aquarius, etc.

simtech, look forward to your review of the Alienware MJ-12.
