new powerbook's internet speed is put to shame

Hi. I just bought a new Apple Powerbook 1.67 ghz 17" laptop with 1680x1050 resolution. I have it hooked up to ur internet (wow cable) and i noticed that its speed was rather poor. My cousin has a brand new Dell Inspiron B130, and his is blowing me out of the water. We ran a speed test. His went at 2 megabits compared to my 1.4. Why would his Dell, which is 2-3 times cheaper than my Apple, be so much faster? We opened the same websites at the same time; he clearly was the victor. Does Apple just stink? Do I need to adjust some kind of setting?
Thanks,
Jared

How are you getting your access? Direct through wire or through Airport?

Regardless, try this: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/mo...&mode=feedback

were u using the dfault safari browser? safari does ok for me but it isn't uncommon for it to hang when trying to load certain sites.

i use camino moreso than anything else.

Putting this laptop up for sale. I desire speed; Apple I suppose doesn't compare to windows. Real shame because I was loving everything about Mac up to this point. So pleasureful to use! The screen, design and layout is absolutely gorgeous.

So, because websites load up a fraction of a second slower on the powerbook you're going to sell it?

I'm sorry, but that's absolutely ridiculous.

I've maxed out my connection many times while downloading and if websites are loading at a slow speed it's not something I've ever noticed.

yeh, i check my DL speed every now and again, particularly when using newsgroups (2 different clients btw), there's no difference in the transfer rates between my mac and my desktop. mind u the desktop is directly connected via ethernet while my iBook is over wireless.

lol, what would u do if your windows machine had an issue? troubleshoot? determine whether or not it's something inherent w/ the machine or something temporary, or just sell it cuz it didn't beat your buddy in a web loading race? i've had far more letdowns in my windows machine than in my Mac, however i address it and patch the 'ole windows machine up to get it up to speed.

Update: On speed tests, the Apple is out-performing the Dell considerably. But that was never the point. The point is that when he clicks on a website, the page comes up instantly. Mine might take 20 seconds. I don't care what a stupid speed test says. All I care about is how much waiting I'll have to do. And for one reason or another, the Apple just isn't performing.

Well I'm being bashed in this forum, so I can expect further bashing...but if I upgraded from 512MB RAM to 1 GB RAM would that perhaps help? I also haven't downloaded firefox...which I hear could be helpful.

OS X likes RAM, so yes, 1 gig will help.

I personally don't care for Firefox, but it does have advantages over Safari.

the current powerbooks are slower than a pentium m 1.6ghz???? UNless his dell is slower than that Its the other way around. Apple notebooks are poor in preformance; how do I know? Ooh I just owned 15 in 1 year Why do you think apple is siwthicn go intel, not because they want their machines chaper. APple said it htem sleves g4 preformance is horrible it only competes against the P 3 that is what ti was desinged for. They have been stuck around the 1 ghz are for years!!! That is why apple moved to intel to correct this problem. THe person who think the notebook is slowe I aggree with but why would you buy now when the new powerbooks are coming out in a mtter of months?

Did you do a truly equal test? Did you both use the same browser? You were using Airport, you should have both been hardwired. You should both delete your browser's cache before testing. Did you both have pop-ups blocked? Both have cookies off? All of these make a difference.

don't know if i mentioned this, but try camino, or opera, now that it's free. camino is my preferred browser. w/ safari i do bump into sites that hang when trying to load, but it is uncommon. if IE sucked in windows (and it does), u'd continue to use it and base the value of the system on it?

I got to play with one of the Core Duos today at an Apple store, and everything on there is very snappy. Even Safari just loaded up sites without issue (and I deliberately went to sites I know are heavyweight).

As to why your Mac is slow, part is probably the PPC (spit) platform but part could be some sort of hangup in your networking setup. Something that is causing packets to hang up while being received or loaded?

dude wimpy, i have no idea what youre talking about. My roommates ibook does just fine loading websites, as fast as my win xp machine running firefox with the network tweak (read: everything except for video loads nearly instantly). I personally would not blame it on your machine. Also, I have several friends who come over with their powerbooks and go on my wireless and it seems to work just fine.

Anyway, I'm not trying to attack you, just putting in my 2 cents.
