I'm on the verge of picking one of these up, either form xmeld or rawpowerpc, and I have a couple of questions:

I'm familiar with the Intel 2200bg wireless but not the MSI bluetooth combo. I currently have no need for bluetooth but, as far as the g side goes, is it fairly equivalent to the Intel? I'm mainly concerned about range.

What brand is Rawpower's 80GB 7200RPM HD? Xmeld's is Hitachi.

Is Xmeld's 2GB RAM 400 or 333? Rawpower's is 400.

Other than that, it's going to be a tough choice between the 2: they're priced identically (haven't checked shipping costs yet).

I would aprreciate some answers, as I need to order this ASAP.

Great forum, it has been very helpful in making a choice.

Epsilon3,

You will get better WiFi range from an Intel card.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Unleaded.

I gather from reading this thread that you're Mr. Rawpower
Can you tell me what brand your HD is and what approximate shipping cost to IL is?

rawpower uses Hitachi 7200rpm drives. I'm pretty sure you can get their shipping costs before you hit the final "buy" button.

Thanks CoffeeShark. You didn't mention if your RAM is 400. Based on price, I'll assume it is.

Well, I think my configuration is final (comments are welcome):
MT-40
2x1GB
80GB 7200RPM
Intel 2200bg
XP Pro

Now I have the tough choice on who to buy from. Xmeld is ahead by $8 (and $.12 for ground shipping). I also read in another thread that you give discounts to college students. Would you extend that to my 16-year old highschooler? I know, it sounds like an overkill for him; I'm jealous myself, having gotten my work XPS 2 just last August...

Please help me decide.

Xmeld uses DDR400.

Unleaded,

You mentioned that the Intel's range is better... but how good/bad is the MSI's? I really want to get integrated BlueTooth, but I don't want to loose out on Wifi as well. I mean, where I usually use my laptop is in the same room (probably about 50 feet away) from the antannea, I currently get pretty good signal with a Linksys WUSB11 but being that this will be my first internal WiFi I'm not sure how well the signal will be received.

Any tips on this? Also, any clue on where the antanneas run within the 1036? I hear that systems where the leads run up the back of the display are usually better reception than those that stay in the main part of the case.

At 50 feet you should be find with MSI's combo WiFi/BT card.

OK. I do use it in different areas of the building at times... but it's also a high powered antanea so it'll probably work. If not I guess I can always get an Intel card later and swap it out, but I'd prefer the built in Bluetooth.

The 1036 was equipped with the PAL tv tuner in european markets, it does not have a US equivalent being offered.

Meh. I'm surprised there isn't some sort of generic module available... but I guess it's probably a propietary slot so not terribly easy to make one for. What do they do if you buy one in the US and go on a trip to Europe and get a sudden desire to watch TV? I mean really people... gotta think of every possible scenario

Hey Coffee, what happened to the CoffeeMug smilie?

Well, you can always get an external TV tuner, we're just talking about the built-in.

coffeemug will be back sometime soon.

1036 vs dv8000

Hey! Great information here!

I was interested in the hp dv8000z, but wanted a gaming pc and was told the dv's x200m was very poor. I am totally into the 1036 but have a few concerns.

1) the HP Brightview screen on the dv8000z is amazing. I havn't seen a 1036 screen, but can anyone compare who has seen them both?? PLEASE?

2) I am 100% sure that I want windows media center 2005. Unleaded or Coffee, do you guys offer the MCE 2005 OS (I will buy from 1 of your sites if I get this comp.)? What tuner card is the best and can I use a remote (ir sensor)? HP has a tv tuner kit would that work with the 1036?

Thanks again you guys have been helpful and I will post my review when I get it (barring any natural disaster).

RoNiNs8:

1) I have not seen the HP's screen but I think the WSXGA+ glossy screen on the MS-1036 is terrific. Perhaps an impartial party from this thread can better comment

2) I believe that you shouldn't have a problem getting MCE regardless of which reseller you go with. I'm not that familiar with the aftermarket PCMCIA/USB based TV tuner solutions out there, but I would imagine that any such peripheral that offers an IR interface and a remote will function just fine in the manner you require.

Dual TV Tuner Options....

Okay...

So I finally bit the bullet and purchased the 1036. I got MCE 2005 and need a tv tuner. Anyone found a good one for the 1036? I am looking for a dual tv tuner, possibly expresscard (don't want to use a usb for this) or pcmcia (i believe the 1036 has a pcmcia slot).

Any review sites for tv tuners are generally help would be appreciated. I honestly have no idea as this concept is new to me.

Thanks!
