External LCD for Laptop with Linux

Thread Starter
I've been thinking about getting an external LCD (Dell 2005FPW) for my laptop, but I'm still a little new to Linux and have no idea how to set up a good xorg.conf file.

Does anyone have any links to guides on how to set up an external monitor for your laptop? I've been googling around but haven't been able to find much. Any advice would be appreciated too, thanks.

Hey hbien, its odd that you haven't been able to find much via Google. Either way, try searching the Gentoo forums - there should be plenty of info.

As for the set-up itself, it should be fairly straightforward. You will need to basically create new Monitor and Screen sections.

Nice choice of an LCD, btw. I thought of getting one but realized that I only have VGA output on my 5680 which would not do justice to the quality of the monitor.

first things first, whats your video card?

if its ATi:
when you run fglrxconfig one of the options it asks you is if you want to enable dual screening.

if its nvidia:
no clue as i have never seen this option... but i am sure its there.

finally, when you config just xorg via:
xorgconf or X -configure or whatnot, i am sure it should detect the 2nd monitor. if not,

i am sure it won't be that hard. seeing as you run Gentoo i am sure you gotta have osme knowledge of linux, and don't forget to check out Gentoo Docs, and forums, they are usually excellent about htis stuff.

i was gonna post a link on this forum, i remember there was a thread a bit back about how some member configured dual screens on his linux, but since the search function isn't working...oh well.
