Z60M with Nvidia7800GTX go???

I just ordered a z60m, it seems like they wont go with anything above the radeon mobile x600 (even that there are the x700 and x800 and x1600 (soon))

Does anyone have a z60m and know if its possible to replace the x600 with a 7800gtx?

from all i could gather the req for the 7800 are 130w powersupply and 9 cell bat. (on the dells).

i have a month till it arrives cant stop thinking about this mod.

its not possible...

likely the x600 is soldered to the motherboard. and even if it is not the cooling solution required for the 7800gtx is big, too big for the insides of the ibm. as well you would need a hacked version of your bios to support it and even if you could physically cram one in the connector would be a different size since you would be getting the 7800gtx from either dell or sager.

simply put it cant be done... if you wanted a 7800gtx you should have found a model that comes with it and bought that.

the x600 is not soldierd its a discreete solution. so that shuold go fine,
cooling solution size shuold be a factor but can be dealt with.

two questions,
1. is the 7800gtx go a standard card or is it tailored by every manufactor, is the dell 7800gtx go diffrent from the sager 7800gtx?
2. is bios flashing required to detect the card? (isnt xp pnp doing that?) or to regulate the voltage and stuff towards the card??

is there any site that have full specs about these cards with thier requirements?

PS, NICE 3dmark SCORE!!! (my desktop with a 3.4 \ Ballistix ddrII @ 567 3-3-3-8 \ xfx 7800gtx @490-1300 is doing only a little better than what you have there.

Seems Like you can go up from x300 on dell to 7800gtx.

I spent $270. I originally had the X300 though. Just keeping it incase my 7800 craps out or something.

Seems Like you can go up from x300 on dell to 7800gtx.

on the dell you can go up from an x300 to a 7800gtx and that is because the 9300 and the xps m170 share the same basic dimensions and the same connection. each manufacturer tailer makes the 7800 to fit in the machine, you cant use a dell card in a sager or the other way around.

just because it is discrete doesnt mean it isnt soldered on and my bet is that IBM/lenovo does solder it in.

as for the bios, the laptop's mobo would have to be flashed to make sure that it was sending enough power to the card and that the card is actually even recognized by the machine as an actual video card. the guys with the 9300 have to flash the xps bios to get their 7800's to work even though they physically fit...

the cooling solution is essential cause the 7800 puts out more heat than an x300 or x600 would....

i have actually not updated my 3dmark score in a while with the latest drivers and auto oc on i hit 7118 marks....

Before you attempt this, contact Lenovo and make certain it wouldn't invalidate the warranty. That would suck big time!

one thing is for sure, lenovo will not touch that machine after i (if) choose to mod it, its a warrenty breaker.

the fact that the cards are "tailored" by the firms (dell doesnt fit into the sager and are not the same means that for this to work i will need to:

1. rewrite a new bios segment manually "cut and paste" and the bios part on the ibm to contain the info of the dell for the gfx card.
2. resoldier or something the connectors of the card to the mobo
3. find a creative heat solutions that will not extra heat the computer

1. can be very risky and pretty complicated and will require probably more than a few assembley hours.
2. (if needed) is plain dirty and not something i whould like to do with a new lappie
3. can be done in some really cool ways (taking the heat sinks out of the computer like the gto cars and make the ibm like a racing \ street racing machine. (a super charger lappie!!!)

thank you for the advice, i think i will not do this for now. even that heat solution is almost worth it all

7100 is seriously amazing!!! what is it overclocked to??

that was with auto oc on... i have not manually OC'd my machine at all....

DriveEuro did the mod with a 9300.

Dont' forget that Dell uses proprietory graphics card formats so they will be UNUSABLE in non-Dell laptops.

EVEN you are sucess to replace the x600 with 7800, you still facing the heat problem. there's only one fan in z60m; if you look at alienware area-51, it got 4 or 5 fans on it.
