Gateway NX850X Screen Problems

My new Gateway NX850X with 17" WXGA Ultrabright TFT Active Matrix (1440 x 900 max. resolution) has horrible issues with excess light "leaks" showing though on dark images and backgrounds. When watching movies or with any screen image that is dark, there is about 1-2 inches of "fuzzy white light" at the bottom of the screen (and blotches elsewhere) that make viewing dark images on the 17" screen a painful experience. Sent the machine to Gateway. They sent it back to me within 1 week saying that they duplicated the problem and replaced the LCD. The problem is that the screen is EXACTLY the same as before. The problem was not corrected. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have 3 other laptops (all Dell) and none of them have any issues like this. Neither does the LCD monitor on my desktop.

Call them and tell them. I have minor light leakage on my 8510GZ(which includes the exact same screen/resolution as yours) at the very bottom, but it's rarely noticeable and never dramatic. Not nearly enough to bother me.

I'd give their service line a call and explain the situation. I'd bet they did replace it but maybe it's more an issue of mounting the screen or something.

My light leak is seriously bad. If it was a minor irritation, I would live with it. I called called Gateway again and they are going to pick it up (AGAIN) and attempt a repair. I am still very interested if other people are experiencing this problem. This is my first 17" widescreen, and I know some models, like the Dell 9300, have had a lot of screen issues like mine. I realy like the Power, "feel" and style of this machine. If I didn't like the overall machine this much, I would have sent it straight back. I bought it through HSN and I have till the end of January to return it to them, so I am hoping that Gateway will rectify the problem this time. If not, back it goes!

Instead of changing the screen, you could ask them to change the outer frame and put double sided tape between the frame and the screen at the bottom....so there is no leak.

It may be your frame came out little bigger I guess.
