Sager 3880 getting WAY to hot - Page 2

@BCloud99

Full load ends up at ~65°C most of the time, sometimes (like I said rarely) to ~70°C. This is with maximum setting on the cpu scale (at 2 ghz).

Forced scale to 800 mhz while compiling (100% cpu usage, gave it time to cool down first):
temperature: 42 C

Forced to max 2ghz while compiling (100% cpu usage):
temperature: 68 C

Right now typing this message:
temperature: 37 C

Wouldn't call these precise readings, but these are my typical temperature readings. I'll try playing Quake 4 tomorrow and see how it is, but I don't expect much change from the highest reading I get.

Mine beeped lastnight and it was very hot. Might be because I was running a few memory intensive programs, though.

Typing this message it is at 48C.

Yes I have heard it beep once, but I havn't been playing WoW on it and havn't heard it since.

I have seen the thing top out at 85C. I have used 2 different programs to check it and they are 1-2 degrees off from each other if not right on the money.

If you are cleaning out your machine every 3 months you have a problem. I have 3 machines that have been running for 3.5 years now without being cleaned out. Yes fully stable (93 day uptime as of 2 days ago, power went out for 45 min or so and battery backup couldn't hold it) as of this message .

Most of the heat is being generated under the video card it feels like. Where the CPU is sitting it has actually cooler than below the left hand rest. From the video output to the touch pad it is really hot. Where the CPU is the machine is a little cooler.

Was moving a file across the network while running at 2.0ghz and it peaked at 83C.

83C is way too hot, as I am sure you already know. I wouldn't think it should be more or approach 70*C.

Perhaps it is a power issue. . . I think your best bet is to send it in. Take advantage of the warranty.

I took mine to compusa because my first semester at college left the 3880 to collect dust that collected in the dorm room over the summer. It was $20 even to have them open it and dust it and clean it. Maybe consider that if you dont want to open it.

When I got 3880V this summer, It never beeped. 6months later I do get occasional beeps, but it onlly happened 3-4 times. It occured when I was in a pretty "warm" place or vents were partially blocked. My CPU temp never goes above 70-73C at full load for several hours. However, P-M DOES NOT generate as much heat as GF6600 does. The graphic card is the real heat producer in this system. If GPU heat dissipation is poor, this can result in overall system increased temperature. We all know that "beeps" come from the heat triggering the sensor, however is it cpu sensor or gpu sensor?

In my opinion, most likely it is the cpu sensor. If your system goes way to hot, it is most likely due to poor contact of the heatsink/heatpipe to the core of the CPU or GPU or both.

In conclusion:

1) Poor conductivity of the core(s) to heatsink
2) Faulty sensor
3) Dust build up
4) User (blockage of the vents, when holding laptop on your lap for example)

These are the things i'd recommend to check/adjust from my perspective...

Mine started beeping, earlier. It didn't feel, to the touch, any hotter than normal, but the beeping didn't stop until I propped up the touchpad end, about 2" and left it like that awhile. I was watching a movie and the AC adapter was plugged in. This is so weird....My screen doesn't freeze anymore, but the laptop gets as hot as ever and.....now the beeping begins. It sounds like there is a certain sequence of events that is happening to a lot of 3880 owners, here. Though, I think I'm the only one who had their screen freeze. There were two lights flashing, up by the on/off button, but I cannot remember which ones....

Hate to beat a dead horse, but in case people are watching this thread, it beeped again while watching a movie. There's a pattern here, looks like. And the fans are changing speed more often, now. Not going crazy, but a few RPMs here and there, over their idle speed.

Have you guys checked your HDD temperature? What is that at when you're using it a lot? If you had to prop up the touchpad, I'm guessing this looks like heat related to the HDD (right hand side) or the heat being generated on the left hand side (where the Realtek Audio, PCMCIA slot and the LAN/modem is). It is definitely much warmer there than my CPU.

I used to have MobMeter, but deleted it and have not been able to find it again. The area, from the right palm wrest to the touchpad to the left palm wrest to the left edge of the keyboard gets very hot.

I keep PCMCIA empty (removed the plastic guard thing) it creates better airflow for gpu heat dissipation and HDD as well, although GPU gets waaaaay hotter then HDD, but 7.2k rpm can reach 50's.
I removed that plastic thing, one day, too. It was soon back in, though, for fear of dust accumulation. I wonder if that should be a major concern?
The dust accumulation at that particular spot is minimal - it is perpendicular to gravity so unless there is something intentional stuffing dust in, you'll never have a problem. But it really helps to keep temp levels lower, give it a try for a few days and see.
Heh, well in my experience, dust gets EVERYWHERE. Ah well, leaving the plastic thing out for a few days. Thanks for the advice.

DUST...
Yeah, try to run something "heavy" with the slot in for an hour and then take it off and compare the temperature difference of both. It is definately noticeble.
What do you use to measure the temperature with? I'm not able to download Mobile Meter from the only link I could find. I've noticed something about having that plastic filler piece removed from the card reader slot, too. Lots of hot air comes out of it! I think the dust will be afraid to go in there, now.

My 3880 has never overheated, even after hours of Call of Duty 2.

Still getting way to hot. Going to send it in as soon as PCTORQUE sends back an email. I used the form on the PCT website but no emails in a week.
