Alienware screen saver - Page 2

Well, I installed, blocked all outside communication through firewall, no problems...I kinda like it, though I'm still wondering why it needs to communicate out?

Any way we could ask AW-persons? I know Steve and Juan and Sascha etc always answer but this I feel is not why they're here, but if they could ask around???

Well, flykitty did say her windows media viewer updated itself, so that's part of the communications.

I installed it, no strange activity on the firewall. I think it looks good.

make sure you leave it for a good few seconds...

it starts with a white blank screen, then there's an out of focus alien hand placed on it, like it's behind a screen. Then you see a dim alien face and it blinks (you can just make it out) then the three fingered hand swipes the screen leaveing scratch lines which morph into "Alienware".

1. It is pretty cool.
2. Shame it doesn't do more IMO.
3. A bit silly making a good opportunity to do something nice for AW customers into a marketing opportunity. I'm sure offering a prize draw to win something in exchange for completing a survey would have yielded more accurate results.

I installed this and did not run into any problems. It's kind of cool seeing that alien hand coming out at you. After I installed it, my 4 y/o granddaughter walked into the room and became scared when the alien hand tried to "grab me" (her words). So I uninstalled it, but had no problems at all.

69.16.150.197 why does it want to talk to Jick?
64.236.38.159 SBC internet services? I don't know who they are
66.132.136.29 Interland Inc? I don't know them either.

I don't ordinarily use screen savers either--maybe this is a normal function?

I just Googled Interland Inc....

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Interland+Inc

appears some kind of web hosting...why this would come with the screensaver I have no idea

Here is SBC internet services...no idea on this one either

I am thinking this is pop-up ads attached to this screen saver?....gotta love Zone Alarm

Jick gets all kinds of possibilities in Google....

I am not a screensaver expert but this seems a little out of the line of normal...I am sure many of you guys will know much more about this kind of stuff than I do.....I am curious as to what you think.....

if i were to block it on zonealarm would it still work?
Oh and mine also just comes up with a Windows Media Sign. whats up with that?

I know what the problem is with this "Window Media"
After i reinstall Windows and install my screensaver something would like going out(say my Firewall) Ok let it go... Than its come a Pop up. Something must install from Microsoft.I think it was a ActiveX or something.Ok install and than i can see the Screensaver. But only the Review in the small Window. If i click to Review in a big Window its crashing..

Jick is the creator of Kingdom of Loathing, a fun little online time-waster. I'm sure it was one of the sites I had visited just before playing with the screen saver.
