yes... we all know you can't stand the hiss, but i recommend you use the 30day umbrella return policy and be done with it. It's obvious that this problem isn't going to go away, and if you dont want to use any kind of external sound card [cheap or not], then you'll be here on these forums complaining about the sound till the end of time.

At least do something that'll put your mind at ease [and benefit you at work]

There's the problem. Sager has been so slow at responding to ANY communication that I'm now out of the thirty-day policy. But maybe Sager can issue the refund.

daveo, why splurge? I ALREADY splurged on this beast. I tell you now that my USB dongle, barely freakin noticeable that leaves my PCMCIA port open for other goodies is the schiznite. I am not editing Madonna's next crappy album. I am blowing C4 charges like crazy, listening to some alreday degraded mp3's and watching some flicks. >>>>>>>>>$30<<<<<<<<<<<

problem solved......next

meh... one would think that the $2000+ we already spent went to working around the small imperfections... if we expected small imperfections, we might have paid less, no?

I know this sounds like "fanboyism" but,

You paid less already. Sager is the cheapest among these kind of laptops.
exactly, paying more would be going the dell/alienware route. I'll take the hiss anyday of the week.

I agree that this problem is pretty much a moot point. The sound on any laptop isn't going to be great and I have never been a fan of integrated sound on ANY system anyways. As you all know any integrated sound out there is going to pick up some noise off the bus and what not so heck with it. I also went the audigy 2 zs notebook route and I am loving it EXCEPT for an issue that the zs seems to be having with BF2 which I play alot and is therefore annoying. Other than that I am uber happy with the zs audio solution and the rest of my CX7 (same thing as Sager's 5720) is a dream.

Earlier in the thread there was mention of a way to map the stereo out to a different port that doesn't have hiss. But the realtek drivers I have don't seem to have this option. I can only change line in and mic in to rear out and stuff. (Note: 9750, not 5720)
KC,

The Audigy would be nice but I put a wireless card in there so I went with the usb toy mentioned earlier. BF2 works great with it, although only having one gig slows it down much. Both the sound and the wireless were a dissappointment but i never got ANY moboard with built in sound worth anything.

there seems to be a limiting factor on the REALTEK remapping I cant remember what it was, I think if you remap the output it does not shut off the speakers.
im curious, lets say you remap the front stereo to a different port, and simply plug in a random stereo plug into the original stereo port, would it then shut off the internal speakers? Thinking that theres something plugged, it might shut off even though stereo audio is going elsewhere. Just a thought.

I just want to chime in hear (no pun intended), as well. The 5720 is a great laptop but the onboard sound IMO is junk. Not only do I have the headphone hiss like so many, but the richness of the onboard sounds leaves something to be desired. I use Bose noise cancellation headphones and a nice Klipsch Pro-media 5.1 set for external sound and gaming and MP3 playback is underwhelming in both cases. I've enjoyed great sound from the Klipsch and Bose in the past but I'm getting literally half the bass and clarity I've experienced in the past. I opted for a USB sound card as well and the difference is night and day. I went with the Phillips Aurilium. 39 bucks online and the sound blows me back in my seat The clarity and bass is tremendous in headphones and my 5.1 setup. Headphone jack is clean as a whistle as well with zero hiss.

And yes I've played with the eq and sound settings in Realtek sound mgr til I'm blue in the face.

Get a USB or PCMCIA sound solution if you buy this laptop. It is a must.

Oh and one more complaint. If I remap my ports in the Realtek Manager, they map back to default after every restart so I'm constantaly remapping the headphone jack to get rid of the hiss. Another annoyance with the on board sound.

The hiss, I can deal with .... for a limited amount of time. It's the echo that kills me in certain applications. I can't even use the headphones in most games....I get that horrible horrible echoing effect.

In some games, I'm able to get around this by using the 2D sound which pretty much makes the gameplay less realistic. Not that the 3D simulation using headphones is anything great to begin with.

Has Sager addressed this issue?

The question that I have is what is Sager going to do to fix this issue? I agree that the headphone output is being WAY overdriven and that generally means that they used the incorrect resistor and capacitor values on the amplifier used for the headphones (in the opamp circuit). Some of these outputs are configurable in software as well through the process of reprogramming the DSP chip. Whatever the issue is, it should be easily understood by the designers of the system and a solution should be coming very soon.

Get on the ball SAGER we want a solution. Please dont leave us hanging!!

Sager finally replied to me:

Quote:
We got the part from manufacture to rework the motherboard for you to reduce the overamplified , here is the RMA Number : ######### to sent back the unit.
I'll send mine in next week or so.

Hey Guys,

Okay if I also reply in this thread?

I got a reply from the Dutch Clevo M570a seller.
They say that the hiss is normal for this notebook. And Sagers solution (changing a part on the motherboard) will only decrease the total volume of the notebook. They also gave me this explanation which I don't understand.

Quote
About the headphone static noise with over amplified, normally on headphone the volume control just use 10%~30% it was enough for user. And the headphone didn’t find the noise as that time. If the volume control 80%~100% have a little static noise but it’s too loudly to user. Normally user did use like that volume percentage. It is for notebook speaker and external speaker use only.

I'm thinking of making a case of the matter.

Sager needs some English lessons. I'm looking forward to when my Sager warranty expires and I can get support from PCTorque.

10–30%? If the individual volumes are still at 100%, just 10% on the master volume through headphones is almost painful.

But as I've told Sager, the current hiss is so bad that it's still very loud even with all sound devices muted.

I'll probably get my 5720 back later this week.

AiG purchased a Sager 9750 for a special 3D Creation Museum virtual tour (using a gaming engine). When we get this, I'll check it's headphone jack as well.
