headphones on the 5720? - Page 3

post #41 of 79
Hi,

I attached my desktop speakers (who have own powersupply) to the headphones exit and than there is no hiss.

How is this possible??? There really is a headphone logo next to the exit.

the headphone port on the 5720 is simply puts out front-stereo. Connecting speakers to the 5720 will yeild little-to-no hiss ... but once i connect real headphones to the 5720 the hiss present , and unbearable for some.

I just got a 5720, maxed out with all the bells and whistles. It sounds like SHIT. My 5 year old compaq that didn't anything but a headphone jack blew this expensive thing away. I'm using the same pair of logitech headphones I used to use with the compaq, and the music sounds flat. The bass is absolutey poor. I have a barely audible hiss, but thats not the issue. IT's the sound quality. CRAP!

The reason why the HISSSSS is gone when we attach speakers instead of headphones is;

The nature of the connection is different, the output doesn't have to supply power and active speakers mostly have quite some 'entrance-resistance' which removes the noise threshold.

As the output is marked with a headphones logo the conclusion can only be;
This laptop is equipped with a (very) bad headphone amplifier.

So if i get the Sound Blaster card i will not have the hiss at all?? The question is though, then is the wireless in this laptop good enough to use without having to buy a seperate card?

Logitech has USB headphones that are supposed to be pretty good. I'm going to try those out when I get home from offshore and compare it to the Sound Blaster card. I'll post when I get the results. I'm very picky when it comes to sound, as I do lots of music editing on my laptop. I gotta have my bass and beats!!!

Fixed my sound issue...My headphones were blown!
I hooked up external speakers and my 5720 ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YEAH BABY!

Freaky Franks
how did you fix it?
post #49 of 79
It was never broke. Somehow, my headphones got messed up between selling my old laptop and buying my new one. I'm offshore so I couldn't hook my new 5720 up to anything to compare the sound and I didn't know my headphones were blown. So I just went accepted that my 5720 sound sucked. WRONG!
I forgot I had my old external speakers on my boat and hooked them up. BAM! This thing ROCKS! I need new headphones. I'm still going to get a pair of USB headphones anyway. They just sound better becouse they are powered and amped. It's good to know that my onboard sound is excellent, though.
I just spent $3,200.00 on this thing.

it is NOT your headphones....The hiss isn't heard on external speakers because they use an alternate power source. The headphones take power directly from the laptop. Therefore you only hear the hiss when listening in headphones.

do you have overclock in bios?

about hiss:
we need to find out how to ground that jack

Do you think that would do it? What about somehow just partially connecting it with the neighboring jack?

As stated in another post, clevo disables OC in mobos connected to SATA drives to prevent damage. I have an SATA drive so, no I do not have the OC option.

DJ: didnt you send your laptop in for "Fixing" the audio issue?
post #55 of 79
Yes, but you saw Sager's response. The 5720 is on it's way back with nothing really changed.

.

This isn't necessarily a fix, but its a good way around - look at the SB Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA card..

After hooking an X-Fi into my main PC and picking up some logitech Z-680 speakers / Grado SR-80 Headphones, I realize the importance of high sound quality. If you have good headphones I think the ZS PCMCIA would be a wise choice..

www.istnc.com

Sells the Clevo m570a (same as the sager) but I hear they have much better support. Probably has the same issues as the sager though.

I am shopping for a new laptop and have been researching the sager. Even with this headset issue and some other minor problems i still think it is worth the price.. it is either this laptop or dropping 3G's for an XPS2.

Feature-wise, the 5720/M570a is probably unrivaled. Quality-wise, well, Dell may be higher there.
