I dunno.. I just received my m570a in the mail this weekend...

The most important thing to me, aside from the performance (which is great.. 6677 3dmarks in 3dmark05, default settings), is the screen.. and the screen on this thing is absolutely amazing... I've heard that the one on the dell has some glare issues.

The main issues I have with this laptop are: Poor onboard sound and wireless
The wireless is slow and quits out despite a strong signal.. Seems like it is being interfered with by something. The sound has that hiss.. Very noticeable on my grado SR-80s, and I had to disable the IR port to get some weird beeping noises to turn off in the background. There is only one pcmcia port, which means I either get a good pcmcia wireless card or a good pcmcia sound blaster card.. I cant have both. Im undecided as to whether I want that turtle beach USB sound card or a USB wireless adapter and the sound blaster pcmcia card. Considering I have a wireless card already, the turtle beach usb option would only be 25 bucks whereas the other way around would cost me well over 100

Actually, I've been pleased with the wireless performance. I did have to go into the drivers and adjust some power setting.

While the screen is impressive, I'm a graphic designer, and I have not been too pleased with how the screen handles highlights.

noise reduction

I mute PC Beep, Rear Pink In, Rear Blue In in the Master Volume window. It reduces the hiss in my 5720. Muting the CD Volume turns off the chirps (ejecting the CD does the same!). Disabling the IrDA also helps a little bit. The rest of the hiss is probably related to the overamplifiing of the headphone signal.

muting the inputs made no difference for me. rear blue in was already muted.

cd drive made no difference for chirps, disabling irda completely eliminated them.

The irda is located right next to the audio output jacks so it makes sense that it would be interfering.

Realtek software Q...

Just got my very own 5720-C... This thing is great! Of course I have been using an old Toshiba that turned 7 years old this January, so just about anything would be an improvement.

Just a quick Q though... I have "The Hiss" and all the other audio quirks I have read about... I have done the "fix" in Realtek, but I would like to know if anyone has figured out how to make the remapping permanent, i.e. not reset to default after a reboot. Just curious... I'll probably get a usb soundcard eventually since I can still hear the harddrive buzzing throuhg the soundcard when I plug in headphones.

Any ho... thanks to all who have previously posted on this issue.

Peace and Chicken Grease!

What "fix in Realtek"? What did you remap?

The hissing and buzzing is a defect of the hardware and Sager/Clevo will not repair it. But the chirping sounds that you hear are due to interference with the IrDA port, which can be disabled through Device Manager to remove the chirping.

the "fix" is remapping the headphone to a different jack, like the microphone jack.... you explained that in an earlier post... and I know all about the "defect" and the IRDA.... again, something you(DJosephDesign) have posted about quite frequently.... but those issues are not what my question was about....

The Question is:

Does ANYONE know how to prevent the output changes made in the Realtek software for the soundcard from returning to their default settings after a reboot?

Thanks!

That's not a "fix," it's a workaround because the sound still comes through the internal speakers.
that's why "fix" is in quotes.... so, do you have an answer to my question or do you just want to keep telling me what I already know from reading the forum?

Aeolus, cool down.

To answer your off-topic question, some searches in this forum will reveal that others have the same issue, but have not found a fix.

....

D.Joseph.... I am really starting to wonder if you can read... do you know what my question is?
Cool off, man! I did answer your question. No one has found a fix to save the Realtek settings.

TIP: It's not a good idea to join a forum and immediately start insulting other members and posting off-topic questions in forums.

Have any of you tried muting the internal mic? This helped for some of the hiss on my machine. However, the sound was still so bad I had t oexchange it for a HP dv5040. I gave up some nice features in the 5670, but HP speakers (Aztec Lansing) are the best sound speakers I've heard on a laptop

This is VERY off topic, skip unless interested

First off I would like to apologize to anyone reading this post whose avatar is not a rubber ducky... I have had a bad day, and would like to rank a bit about a little pet peave I have that has been brought to light by this forum... in particular an individual who thinks the earth is less than 10,000 years old... I would like to add to my apology the fact that I have had to of my favorite High Gravity Ales prior to this rant, which gives me the courage to RANK with an extreme sport kind of vigor! On to of all that, and I know it's starting to sound like an orgy of apologies, I apologize to the administrator of the forum, anyone under age, those who choose to read, those who have to skip this, and last but not least, my mother, because, frankly, I know better than to continue... but I'm gonna.

Rubber Ducky... you are not my friend. Furthermore, you are not helpful. If I were the admin of this forum, you would have been ousted a long time ago. I can appreciate that you have a problem with your laptop, the same problem that a lot of folks are having. I can understand your frustration with the manufacturer of your, and my, laptop. I even thank you for starting this thread to help solve the issue, so that a collective effort can be made to fix, work around, and in general alleviate our collective problem.

However, your continual habit of restating the little bit of information that you do possess concerning this issue in a belligerent manor, over and over and over and over and over and over (am I making my point) and over and over again only clutters up the forum and eliminates the usefulness of this instrument of knowledge.

My question, as stated the first time, was not of topic, but rather on the topic of a "fix" or "work around" to the problem at hand, a work around to the problem specifically related to this thread. The question stated "does anyone know how to do 'X' "... not "please let me know if you do not know how do 'X', or 'Y' and 'Z', but would rather let me know what little you do know and even though that little bit has been repeated by you for FIVE FREAKIN' PAGES of this forum....

Most of can read, that is why we come to forums, and those of us who know the answers to the questions and reply with them are given praise... Like you Doc and Luke, assuming you are indulging this rant... apologies and orgies if you are. Those like the Little Rubber Ducky get, as a rubber duck would say, immediate insults from new members who want progressive thoughts and positive answers, not NAY-Saying, book thumping, doom, gloom and all that other shtuff.....

Again, apologies to the innocent, of which I know I do not belong... the time came to gripe and ol' D.Joseph ticked me off...

That's it... I'm sure I forgot a point or two in all my rage, but oh well, at least I got out what I did.

Peace and Chicken Grease

Aeolus:

Although I completely agree that the rubber duck has been complaining about the sound too much (there was even some posts about it, if I am not mistake), writing such a big rant in a tech support forum is usually not advisable and could be a reason for banning.

As for your tech question:

The software (sound panel) that is bundled with the driver for the 5720 sound is MAJOR FECES. Besides not saving the settings, it doesn't allow complete customization of the settings (like the sound panel in the 8790) and some other stuff...

What you can do is download the 8790 sound drivers. There you will find an .exe file name "soundman" or something like that (I'm not writing from my 5720 so I can't check the exact names). You can, then, replace the existing "soundman.exe" (or something like that) with this one. It is the .exe that open when you click on the Control Panel icon, which is where you remap the sound.

This MAY solve the problem of saving the remapping of the jacks. Or may not. I know it solves part of the distortion of the sound (which is insane at some frequencies). But since it is pretty simple to do (just don't forget to save the existing file BEFORE replacing it, of course), it is worth a shot.

Thanks

I'll give that a try at home...

And i promise to never ever ran like that again...

I would understand being banned after all that...

Uhn.. Seems like a rollback happened. I posted something here yesterday.

Don't forget to post the results, specially if it worked.

I have the driver zip file, and I've tried a few things to no avail, but I still have a couple of ideas left... I'll stay in touch when I get around to tinkering with it some more....

Here's a theory. Maybe you can manually edit the I/O presets or even create your own. The Realtek software does remember the preset that you select, just not any remappings that you make in that preset.
