Turn Your D810 into a Gaming Monster - Page 4

Yes.

Alright. Thank you for the quick reply. The computer has the whole deal as to warranty and my school computer techs are dell certified techs so I wasn't to eager to change a ton of things. We are allowed to change hardware within our capabilities though, so this should work out fine.

Great, good luck with it. Remember though that my heatsink didn't sit flush on the 6800Go core, so I had to add a copper shim with AS5 on both sides to ensure complete contact.

Thank you. Both for wishing me luck and posting the How-To guide that makes it possible.
Yeah I read your post several times through before officially deciding to try it. I actually have some copper lying around from other mods both successfull and... well... not.
Once I received the laptop and saw the bios was version A04... well it's asking for it to be done I think. That and having experienced the same issue that you encountered with F.E.A.R. and not being able to run max res. That's just wrong

Anyway, I'll be sure to post the results afterward. Wont be soon as my wallets not as thick as I'd like to think it is, but soon enough my computer will be a bit more worthy.

I'm eyeing that 7800 mod for the future.

Just put a 6800go in my d810 today.

Went without a hitch and i've got it running at 4478 3dmarks 2005 with quality.

I'll just put on performance and see how things go.

For reference to anyone having trouble finding the copper as i did (being in teh UK often makes things difficult to find...) i used the part of a floppy disk that covers the access point as a shim for the core and the ram. Not ideal but sometimes you have to improvise.

Temps are good though 50 idle and 65 load, with the fan never going above slow.

My 6800 should be shipped out in a few days. Has anyone tried the S-video jack and the Analog out after putting in the new card? Any problems or was it also just that much better?
I've gotten the card installed and working after removing all ATI drivers and software and now the computer wont take the Nvidia drivers. Is there something I'm not doing? What driver are you all using?

What do you mean by the computer won't take the nVidia drivers? Try using Driver Cleaner Pro to clear both ATi and nVidia remnants and then try installing the nVidia drivers again. Make sure you boot into safe mode when you use driver cleaner pro.
I ran the driver cleaner and I still get the same message which is... "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

I've tried old drivers and new drivers. Nothing is working. I even get that message when trying to install drivers directly from Nvidia.
The card is in and working and idle at 48 degrees Celsius.

any ideas?

Ohhhhhhh. Ok, the problem is you're using standard nVidia drivers and they won't recognize the mobile Dell card. Grab some modified drivers and you'll be good to go. I use the X-treme G series from tweaksrus.com. Here's the link to the download page: http://www.tweaksrus.com/index.php?o...163&Itemid=41/

I had tried other modified drivers but had no luck That driver however installed without a problem so thank you.

I can tell you right now that the Go 7800GTX WILL NOT work in a D810/M70. It's power requirements are too high, the BIOS doesn't support it, and the cooling solution can't handle the heat that comes off the card. However, depending on how cool running the new 7800 Go is, you might be able to get one of those in there

I beg to differ...

It's true that the power requirements are too high, but that's only in 3D mode. That's where BIOS editing comes into play.

Read the date on that post; that was before I knew about your research and undervolting. The 7800GTX still doesnt work properly in the M70/D810, but it is possible to jimmy it in there at lower volts with only some performance loss.

LOL

I forgot about it, was just browsing through the article

My apologies.

I did the D810 with 6800go upgrade this weekend and things work. My system gets 4300 in 3dMark05 and is stable. Long run benchmarks do not have the GPU core go higher in temp than 73c (the fan stays at slow rpm and I have not seen it kick in to high when doing a benchmark for about 20 minutes). I used AS5 and the copper shim in the 6800 when I did the upgrade.

However, idle climbs above 65 at which point the gpu fan kicks in on slow revs and cools it down to about 54c. So with the gpu fan at slow the laptop will remain at 54c when idle. The bottom of the laptop remains quite warm. CPU idles at 40c. The tests were done with the gpu being at standard clock settings and a slight overclock. The overclock did not seem to make too much of a difference (maybe a degree or two)

Ambient temps are 29c in these tests.

I'm wondering what idle temps the people who have done this mod get and are these idle temps with the gpu fan on or off.

Thanks...

Glad to hear it worked brzez . Those temps seem about right. On the one I did, I forced the fans to always be on by using the I9kFanGUI program. Did you AS5 the CPU too? That would probably get those temps down too. Anyway, always have you fans on at least the slow speed to get some air moving through that laptop .
Yes. I put AS5 on the CPU and it lowerd the tems a few degress so it definatly works.

What idle and ambient temps are others getting?

6800 Go Ultra

I put a 6800 in my d810, I could not find a copper shim so I put an aluminium one in instead. Laptop runs great, 4350 in 3dmark 2005. The card I bought off of ebay is the 6800 ultra. It runs at 450/550. I lowered the cpu speed to 325 to cut back on heat. My card idles at about 63 degrees, not bad, a little warm, but not bad. When I fire up games it jumps to 83 degrees and when I fire up oblivion ( a brilliant game by the way) the card maxes out at 90 degrees. This seems to be a bit warm when compared to other peoples results on this board. Has anybody else had this experience and if not does anybody have some advice to get the temperatures 5-8 degrees lower. Thank you in advance!

P.s.

By the way my ambient temp is 29 degrees and I have not seen any artifacts whatsoever, it is running very stably, just a bit warm for my tastes.

Well, you're running an Ultra rather than a standard 6800 Go, so you're going to have more heat. The aluminum shim will work, but it won't be as effective as a copper shim. Are you using AS5 as a TIM? Your best bet would be to undervolt the card. Lowering the clocks really doesn't do much for heat, but lowering the voltage will. Use the program to do NiBiTor to do so, lemme know if you need some help with it .
