6800 Go Ultra

Thank you for you reply, I will play around with NiBiTor and report my findings! Also I use as5. but only a tiny amount on each side, how much am i supposed to use? Thank you again!

Just make sure you cover the entire GPU core and both sides with AS5. The layer doesnt have to be very thick, but it must cover the whole surface in order to maximize surface area . Also, sorry if you already know this, I've seen it several times (and I used to do it myself) that people incorrectly use NiBiTor when modifying voltages. When you go to the voltage table editor:

DO NOT change the label. This simple is the label the driver uses to recognize the voltage. Insetad, change the VID, as this will control the voltage. I believe it scales linearly, so in 2D you'll want to use VID 00. 3D is stock VID 06 I believe, so try using 05 or 04 to lower your temps. Find a voltage where you can get cool enough temperatures but still get decent clocks (400+ on the core is still possible I think). Try to maximize the performance of your card, good luck!

I have lowered the voltage to 1.1. I can run up to 375/550 at this voltage, but the card still runs a bit hot there, right now i'm running at 350/400 and it seems to be running on average about 4 degrees celcius cooler. Wish I could get it a little lower, but it is better! Thank you for the help.

Wow, so you have the 3D running at VID 01? I would have expected more of a temp drop, but something is better than nothing .

at setting 02 I can runt the card stably at 400/450 for a 3dmark score of 4700. For most games I run the card stays in the high 70's. When I play a modern game such as Age of Empires 3 or oblivion it hovers at 86-87, so there is improvement and the performance is not bad. I think I might just have a hot running card.

So, you absolutely need the copper piece for the HSF to touch?

I've just dropped a 6800ultra into my d810. There is barely any contact without a shim. I've gone the aluminum (i.e. floppy disk cover) route for mine. Core currently runs very hot (as does heatsink - contact is OK :-) ), even in 2D (65+)... which is on VID02 by default. Gotta play around a bit to try and reduce it a little (I'd rather not have the VGA fan on full even in 2D)

I know this thread's kinda old but I might be able to get a 6800 Ultra - kinda hard to get ANY Dell 6800 here in Germany anyway.

Would that card run in my D810 with an X600s heatsink + copper-shim and the stock 90W PSU?
I don't mind major underclocking and undervolting if necessary.

bye

It would be nice if you could get a straight answer to that question, as it would help others also looking for that information. I don’t need anything more to play quake III or quake IV, but the desire to take on a project is flowing thru me like never before.

In any case, I can’t see getting a more powerful power adapter would hurt. I guess all the old users of the notebook has moved on, and don’t feel it’s necessary to help/supply the users of the notebook today with the information regarding this topic anymore.

I'll give an update then :-)

My 6800 ultra was an ebay bargain (well was cheap £20!) because the seller claimed it didn't work correctly. And it didn't. I'm fairly sure that some of the solder joints for the GPU are bad/broken, cos the card can run for a period and then hang if the laptop is knocked, and you can reset the laptop by pressing near the GPU :-O.

However - fundamentally, the 6800 Ultra did work (accepted by the BIOS and would boot into windows), on the stock PSU and heatsink with home-made shim. I'd undervolted and underclocked mine, but it still ran very hot, such that the fans were permanently on.

In the end, I gave up on it and stayed with the x600. Now if I could find a cheap 7800, I might be tempted to have another go :-)

Thanks for the update!

Does the 7800 run coller than the 6800Ultra, and will it require less power? Because from the readings here, it seems as if the 7800go would be the way to go. I don't do much as far as gaming with my laptop, but the thought of doing the pin mod and graphics mod sounds like fun. Why have an older laptop, if you can't play inside it a little bit.

As I understand it, only the Go 7800GTXs work in D810s, not any of the lower end 7800s (like GS etc), or the newer 7900/7950s etc.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on whether it's cooler than a 6800 ultra (though it should be, 7800 being on 90nm process rather than 110nm of the 6800 ultra).

I do have to keep my notebook mobile, so I guess the only thing that will interest me now is the 6800go non ultra.

Thank you so much for replying! I was feeling as if I was in the world of "I Am" (Will Smith), LOL!

The 7800gs and 7900gs are Core 2 Duo platform cards, whereas the 6800 and 7800gtx were in the i9300 Centrino platforms, and they do not interchange. Whether they changed a pinout or if it's just a BIOS thing, I really couldn't say, but basically they're the difference between i9300 cards and i9400 cards. You have to use an i9300 card.

However, I thought you had to have the XPS Gen 2 bios in an i9300 to make a 7800gtx or 6800 ultra work... finding out that I could possibly put a 7800gtx in a d810 makes me veeeeery interested. A04 bios is all it takes? I know on the i9300 mod you had to have the 9-cell battery and the higher output power brick as well.

(I'm building a water-cooled laptop, so heat is not an issue for me. Lack of available power might be an issue though... XPS power brick might work?)

Show me what you got dude, here!

And if you find any cheap ones, be sure to let us know.

I'll be fine with a 6800go, since I'm getting by with a x600.
