Which OS with Intel chip? - Page 2

apple's only concern is that ppl can't readily run OS X on non Mac (branded) hardware. multi-boot machines tend to be problematic when done on the same drive. a best case solution in a desktop would be to install a 2nd drive and simply use the separate drives for different installs.
While not an *easy* exercise, you can get just about any two Operating systems setup as a dual boot on the same drive - and I'm pretty sure it will the same on the MacBook Pro

Otherwise, it uses an X1600, so gaming will be nice and there is likely to be very few issues in terms of driver support.

Macbook Pro will run windows fine according to this.

Running Windows on a Mac while not supported by Apple is definitly not discouraged, and possibly even encouraged(Though obviously they would want you to run MacOSX Thing is they are not going out of their way to change the hardware to keep you from running other OSes on it.

However Vista is the first MS product that will out of the box support the replacement for the BIOS in the MacTel ICBM(Intel Chip Based Mac, I like this name better than Macbook and I stole it fomr someone else so other versions of windows will probably require patching in order to get to work.

Personally though I will be setting up linux on one if I get it and screw windows

Ati card will make it harder for linux I hear. any thoughts on that?
A bit, maybe. Driver wise-however I had no problems running Knoppix and Ubuntu on my 9600xt.

oh, nice to know

Well it depends. If I remember right I believe i heard there isnt a linux driver for that particular card. However recently ATI has been trying to clean up their image a little and releasing binary drivers for linux so it may very well be on its way(Or may have been released since I heard that tidbit anyways)

I am definitly wary of ATI to be sure. But as it stands right now considering the amount of things that are iffy on the MacTel ICBM for me in my field of Pro Audio, I think I will wait. Especially given that I just tried Ubuntu on my PB and while it doesnt have 3d acceleration, almost everything else does work fine, and the wireless driver is currently under development, so I am hoping the next release of Ubuntu will have a good version of it. I will then set up this notebook as a dual-boot linux/Mac and wait for a real 'Pro' Mac to come out.

I like the Macs, I like their quality, and I dont mind the Mac OS so much though I definitly prefer Linux, so I dont mind paying for the notebook, IF I will use it, aat the present time I tihnk a few to many corners were cut and things dropped, so I will wait a little while.

Same info from CNNmoney:

"Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in an interview Tuesday that the company won't sell or support Windows itself, but also hasn't done anything to preclude people from loading Windows onto the machines themselves.

"That's fine with us. We don't mind," Schiller said. "If there are people who love our hardware but are forced to put up with a Windows world, then that's OK."

And what a sweet world that would be -- for the Windows folks out there, that is."

Apple could be using the optional CSM module.
Apple is not going to use a CSM module...there's no benefit for them to support legacy software, much less to do something intentionally to allow users to install Windows.

From what I have read, it is not possible to just install Windows XP and the previous versions of Micro$oft's OSes on a MacBook Pro. just as Chrysaor pointed out. Apple is using EFI (Extesible Firmware Interface), and Windows XP and it's earlier versions depend a BIOS to boot the laptop, so some one will have to either make a hack so that Windows will boot, or wait until Vista.

Here is another article from MacDailyNews on the subject:
http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/8170/

it links to the same article in the post by chrysaor.

Some one will just have to rollup their sleaves and write a boot driver that works, I guess.

I personally would like to have OS X and Win XP on the same machine in seperate partions.
