R.I.P Sager NP-8790

I finally did it...I pulled the plug on my trusty Sager NP-8790 and I am converting the parts that I salvaged from it into a second desktop to compliment my main gaming rig.

I dont know if you guys remember this thread:

http://www.notebookforums.com/forums...ht=8790+broken

In any case...I was still able to use the laptop (in fact I am using it right now to type this message ). The 8790 was now pretty much a desktop with limited capabilities. The graphics card would artifact if I played any games for more than 10 minutes...and other woes...

I am going to pull out the following parts:

Processor: P4 3.4Ghz HT Northwood
Hard Drives: 2 x 60GB 7200 rpm
RAM: 2 x 512MB DDR400 PC3200 RAM

and use the CPU and HDDs in a desktop. I didnt want to spend too much money on the desktop so I came up with this configuration :

http://www.notebookforums.com/forums...d.php?t=125429

Newegg:

1. Antec Solution SLK3000-B Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

2. ABIT IS7-E2 Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard

3. eVGA Geforce 6600GT 128MB

4. SeaSonic S12-330 ATX12V 330W Power Supply

5. Patriot Signature Series 1GB (2 x 512MB)

6. LG DVD Burner

Heatsink Factory:

1. ThermalRight XP-90

2. Panaflo 92mm Fan

3. Nexus 120mm Real Silent Case Fan

Buy.com:

1. 2.5" - 3.5" Hard Drive Adapter

TOTAL COST: $565.00

Now I have a second desktop to go along with my main rig as seen in this thread:

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=125014

I have an IBM T-42 from work that I will use if I need computing on the move

How much does Sager want from me to get the 8790 repaired? $1645.00 for parts and labor.

I feel like I'm about at that point- where I can't game beause I'm scared the system'll go. I'm about done w/ the pussyfooting it, tho'. If it's gonna go, it's gonna go. I've got warranty left, so guess I might as well use it. Unfortunate that yours wasn't covered under the warranty.

Good to see that the guts will still serve you well Hey- maybe you can sell the screen or keyboard if someone dumps pop on their machine or something.

Screen is toast. I'll ship whatever parts people want...DVD Drive, Keyboard, chassis parts (in case you want to paint them), camera, RAM, Fans...etc. etc.

Or someone can just buy the whole lump...it will be missing the HDDs and the CPU but it could be modded into a desktop once you get rid of the chassis and break everything out into a Small Form Factor chassis.

What you want for the whole thing? Did I miss the screen toasting?

Am I assuming the dvd drive is just the ROM? and not the burner? Also what would you want for the power brick and battery? I envision mine frying itself here from the sounds it is making.

I'm not interested in making money off this thing. Let me think about the price...

DVD-ROM + CD Burner combo drive
Power Brick and battery - I have the 12cell larger capacity battery. Make sure you understand that this battery cannot be installed while the subwoofer etc. are in the laptop.

I'll post a price as soon as I complete transferring stuff to my new desktop. Still waiting for the parts to arrive.

What a shame lovely laptop...

I didnt change them dude...I had a 5660...bought a 8790...broke the 8790...Cisco gave me a T-43...no need for a broken 8790...convert the salvaged parts into a desktop...order parts for another killer desktop...sit back and relax
