Hyperthreading ,Pentium Ms and HEAT!
Hey guys.. I have read a few posts dealing with the 1.7 M vs the P4 M. Especially the Sager group. The reason a desktop chip is faster and it does NOT throttle down at all. That's not a good thing in a notebook! HEAT HEAT!
Its simple really
The M chip is BETTER ALL AROUND ESPECIALLY for a notebook. (Read the Anandtech review)
It runs cooler at the same relative
speed as the desktop because ithe P4 M's need two cycles to do the same instruction becasue of the cache. IT's ALL ABOUT THE CACHE. NO need to be "hyperthreading". With 1 gig of cache you can do all the things a p4M chip does in the same fashion. hyperthreading is non issue, and the 400Mhz bus speed is half the 800 mhx bus speed and there again becasue the M chip only needs 1 cycle for evry two the P4 M or desktop chip uses it only has to run at 400Mhz....CAN YOU SAY MORE EFFICIENT AND COOLER and the "pipelines are shorter as well.......So these guys who think the pentium 4m will exceedingly out perform a Pentium M chip are really not in touch with whats going on.
Im no engineer, but I can see that the Pentium M is the wave of the future...I believe it will AND SHOULD replace the desktop Pentium chips...
I was looking at the the Sager as well. I feel they are PUTTING too much in a small box.Too much heat. Yeah they are fast but is that speed really important, Any game will run fine on a 1.4 Pentium M with a top graphics card.
The real desktop Pentium 4 chips have no place in a notebook..."welll maybe for bragging rights) They create too much heat! See the heatsinks on them puppies in a DEsKTOP? No way those should be without that heatsinking in a closed tight notebook...othrwise we could run them in desk tops with just and exhaust fan on the case and a small heatsink.
Heat is THE killer of electronics. Not so much if you leave them running as the components expand and stay in that state. when you shut down the compents that were very hot
They now begin to contract...now with all the tiny metallic circuit traces expanding and contracting hundreds
of times maybe in a few months...Well they get brittle and eventually crack and MOBO time Vcard time HD time etc.
You will find most of your issues with electronics when you TURN them on after being off awhile....THE lightbulb is a GREAT example. Turn it on and FLASH its gone, Rarely does a light bulb burn out when its on. The filimant gets hot/cold/hot/cold/expands/comtracts becomes brittle, eventually when you turn the bulb on, the shock of the electrical signal and heat opens the weakened brittle filiment...Well we have all seen that.
I leave my home systems running 24/7. But a notebook is a different animal. it's nature as being mobile does not allow that so you have to have the Coolest config possible WITH the most power as well..........The Pentuim M fits that need MUCH BETTER THAN the souped up "desktop" chips and performs just fine to boot!
