Initial FS760/W thoughts

Thread Starter
Well after most of the wekend messing witht he machine off and on, I think I am keeping it.

Initially I did not like the way the AC plug plugs in. The connection in the laptop seems kinda week. The paint seems to be kind of cheap and will wear fast I can tell.

Overall these are minor issues. I was initially going for a "light and thin". For the price/specs it was hard to pass this up and get a thing and light that was only 1-2lbs lighters and smaller screen with less power. This 15.4 is really light and thin for its size, only 6.1 lbs and very thin.

The screen is exremely nice and BRIGHT, probably the brightest screen I have ever seen on a laptop. Much brighter then my xps2.

I can not for the life of me get everything to work after fresh installing XP Pro. The fn doesnt work for screen controls and sound. The modem is not known and mass stroage controller devices. I did find a program called Sony Launcher. I instaleld this and it fixed my initial problem of the recover dvd saying unkown language ona fresh load. But even when you choose the sony libraries and device drivers not everything works still.

I figured out a low, down dirty trick. I booted off the restore dvd and did a c drive restore. I let it go all the way till about 80% then it asked for dvd 2. I then just rebooted the machine. At this point i had a feeling it went to dvd 2 just for applications. I was right. It had the OS with all the imprtant sony stuff for functionality and the drivers. So it was essentially a fresh load. At this point I just used my XP Pro Corp disc form work and did an upgrade to make it pro. I hate doing upgrades and prefer fresh installs, but at this point it seems to be working fine.

I am not going ot run 3dmark05 on it, but I tested COD2 on it with all the graphics levels turned down and dx7 initiated and it runs GREAT at 1280x800 in 16:10 WS aspect. So i could honestly say this machine is a great low end all around machine with moderate gaming capabilities.

p4 m 1.86
512mb ram
6400 go with 128mb dedicated ram (not turbo cache)
100gb hd

This is stock main sepcs adding 2gb ram next week. This machine can NOT be beat at the $1099 price I paid at Best Buy. I will add more details and pictures when I get time.

Concur w/ Max ... for what it is it's pretty thin/light. I'm a bit spoiled coming of a S-170, but I needed something w/ a bigger screen (although resolution is the same).

The screen is just plain fabulous, even when compared side by side w/ XBrite on S-170. Just brilliant even at "medium" brightness setting.

Unlike Max, I completely repaved with XP pro, reinstalled drivers from a seperate (previously burned) CD and reinstalled the one or two apps I wanted from media recovery DVD's. Everything came up fine for me, including a the snigglets max pointed out.

I will also be keeping mine and have ordered 2GB upgrade ... should be here tomorrow. Great minds think alike, I guess.

All in all, good value for money, me thinks.

Wow, are you sure it has 128 MB dedicated memory? I asked a sales associate because the video card wasn't listed at BB when I was there today and he said it was shared.

How would the 6400 go compare to a 128 MB dedicated x600?

I'm thinking of purchasing either this laptop or the HP zd8215us http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1117177857975

Hello,

Is there a big difference between the s-170 screen and this one. Is it more confortable ? Is the screen better ?

thanks

Well, the display on the FS760/W is (and appears) much bigger and brighter. Be aware, though, that it's a trade off as the entire lappy is also much bigger. I love my S-170 but it was just too small for long term use w/out external display. I also loved it's travel weight, but it turns out I don't use a lappy on the road as much as anticipated so ...

nvidia 6400/ fs760 vaio

I am also looking to purchase the FS760 and went to bestbuy to check out the video card. Looking at the property, it run on PCI-E x16 and has 128MB memory. Normally, this indicates dedicated memory. However, after checking with nvidia, I found this assumption to be entirely FALSE.

Below is quoted from Nvidia.....

TurboCacheTM is a new technology which brings GeforceTM 6 series performance and features at an affordable price. By allowing the graphics processing unit (GPU) to share the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated local onboard video memory and dynamically available system memory , TurboCache turbocharges performance and provides larger total effective video memory. The total effective video memory depends on the amount of system memory dedicated local onboard video memory. The following tables will provide the amount of video memory your graphics card can provide based on these values:

*the column alignment may be off due to this editor.

Sytem Memory 256MB 256MB 256MB 256MB
Local Onboard Vid Mmry 16MB 32MB 64MB 128MB
Total Effective Mmry 64MB 64MB 128MB 128MB

System Mmry 512mb 512mb 512mb 512mb
Local onboard vid Mmry 16mb 32mb 64mb 128mb
Total Effective Mmry 128mb 128mb 256mb 256mb

System Mmry 1gb 1gb 1gb 1gb
Local onboard vid Mmry 16mb 32mb 64mb 128mb
total effective vid mmry 128mb 128mb 256mb 256mb

Therefore, it's safe to conclude that the geforce 6400 w/ turbo cache DO have onboard memory. There are portion of dedicated memory but not the entire 128mb.

I talked to sonystyle as well regarding this question and they told me it was 128 MB dedicated. This statement is misleading as well.

Hope this helps clears up any question anyone may have.

another difference is that this card is 64 bit Vs x600 which is 128 bit.

Could someone recommend a laptop running with the x600 that runs around $1100 and no more than $1200??

I may go with the FS760 considering there is no other notebooks out there that has same or better components and at the same time beating the $1099 price tag.

Vgn-fs760/w

Hi guys. I own FS760/w. I was also supriced, cause coming without any CDs. So. I did new fresh installation of XP PRO. Here is just one problem. Driver for touchpad dosen't work ! Touchpad work in basic functions, but without "scroller". Other works propertly.
BTW: I did order for my CD recovery. That cost 25$ (shipping and handling) no more fee.
Also, i call to SONY support, but guy, on other side was not helpful. He dont understand his job So don't call there :O)
