My usb 2.0 flash drive wont work in my usb ports

Thread Starter
Ive tried using my pny attache flash memory stick on my desktop but it wont work. All my other usb devices work, printer, scanner and mouse. But I plugged in the flsh drive and nothing comes up. I went to the device manager and there an exclamation mark above the mass storage device It says that " The NTKERN.VXD device loader for theis device could not load the device driver. Code 2." Could it be that the memory is usb 2.0. IM running windows ME. Maybe I have an older version of the usb. Ive googledit and found some sites that say the 2.0 will only run on Windows 2000 and XP. But then I looked at besbuy and they have pci cards with usb 2.0 ports for windows 95 and newer but they include the windows 2000 and up drivers. So maybe I just need a driver update. I feel like I'm rambling but any help would be appreciated. For now I can use the flash memory on my lappy.

the drive may be toast!

if it doesnt work on more than one computer, and it doesnt need drivers, you are SOL!

Actually, it does need driver - all devices do, but the driver support for USB mass storage class devices is already included in Windows Me.

Making good use of Google about this error: http://www.google.com/search?q=NTKERN.VXD+device+loader

Really? Microsoft thinks it has included a built-in USB Mass Storage Class driver with Windows Me, as with Windows 2000 released prior to it.

In any case, all devices require a driver whether you are using Windows 3.1 or Windows XP - the difference is what drivers come with the operating system.

thats my point. much less usb drivers to hassle with (if any) for xp. that and ME is no longer supported, and just crap IMO.

hope u get it working soon.

You are missing the point. Windows Me includes native USB flash drive support - no additional driver required.

Whether or not it is a crap OS is another matter.

back in the day when i had ME, there were several devices that needed additional things.

im not missing your point at all. what im trying to say reallly has no meaning to the OP anymore, so my point will be dropped.

No one uses ME strongly upgrade to XP

Windows ME was a farce and I would strongly recommend you upgrade to WIN XP or at the very least Windows 2000 less problems and hassles.

if you have a USB 2.0 flash drive, and a computer that's old enough to still be running Windows ME, I would suspect that the USB ports on the PC are pre-USB 2.0, and won't support the USB 2.0 flash drive, even with a newer device driver.
