Inspiron X1 vs 710m, need help choosing!

Hi guys, I really have a problem deciding on which one to buy...

I really want an ultra-portable notebook, the one I currently have is the Compaq v2000 series 14.1" WXGA, with 768MB ram and a P-M 1.6Ghz. It is a little chunky and heavy at times, I replaced my PowerBook 12" for this Compaq, so I can't get used to the bigger/heavier size.

The main things I use it for is general office stuff like web browsing, accounting. Plus web page development using programs like photoshop, dreamweaver and flash MX. I also like playing RTS's like RedAlert 2, and C&C Generals. On my Compaq I can also get CS to play pretty well.

I really like the X1 as it looks more robust and better (in my opinion). I think the silver accents the 710m is using is getting a bit boring now. Plus I like the X1 due to the size and weight.
I like the 710m due to the internal optical drive, and faster processor, but I really dislike the overall look of it. And it is more chunkier then the X1 due to the internal optical drive.

My main concern is the processing power, I know the 710m will be better in that respect, but will the X1 really lag that much behind for what I want it to do? I'm not to knowledgable with ULV processors.

Also price is not an issue as it is being bought through the company my wife works for, but it needs to be Dell as they only deal with them.

Thanks for any help guys.

I have the 700m and the laptop rocks. while i haven't used the x1, the lack of optic drive in the latter took it off my list because when you factor in the optic drive the weight bumps up to that of the 700m. Also the screen of the 700m is awesome probably the best i have seen on a 12 inch model. the keyboard takes some use to get to know but its decent. the battery life is awesome and the build quality is great. So overall i love this purchase.

does the casing on the 700m feel solid or kind of plasticy?

I ask because my compaq presario feels quite flimsy/plasticy and i really dont like that feeling.

can the X1 handle games? I know it dosen't have a fan, but I just saw the X1 and DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN its nice!

and no the 700m is VERY SOLID

the 700m is very very solid. Hp and Compaq laptops cant even compare sorry. I have bought laptops from several other companies but stayed away from two, Sony and HP. Why? because all the people i know who use them have nothing but problems with them (and these are business people who don't screw around with them).

Yep, the 710m is a very solid machine. I am really happy with mine.

Also the screen on it is fantastic!! I am so happy with it in that respect. I have read the screen on the X1 isn't that good.

I am really tied between the two, I am now leaning more towards the 710m because I do indulge in the odd game or two..and now that everyone is saying it's a solid build, I'm leaning even more towards it.

Especially RTS's as I have mentioned, but the newer RTS's are going more and more 3Dish like Command and Conquer Generals and games as the such, I am a bit worried as to how they would perform.

I also do quite a bit of Photoshopping on my notebook in terms of designing webpages, so, once again, I have no idea how it will perform.

The other thing I was thinking of is the heat the X1 will produce when running Photoshop/Games for hours on end. Because my Compaq Presario ATM gets quite hot and that has a fan, so I dunno.... Well, not so much the heat, but the processor (i imagine) wouldn't run for very long with high heats, it would probably die sooner.

I'm about 60% leaning towards 710m and 30% leaning towards X1. The only thing that is really going for the X1 for me ATM is the form/build/size/look of the machine.

Have you considered the Sony TX series at all? I recently went through a similar choice to you, in the end I went for the TX as it's very thin and light(carbon fibre chassis) but it has an onboard dual layer dvd burner. It's just slightly smaller than a 17 inch machine :

Bear in mind, none of these machines are going to be good for modern gaming, the 700m/710m's integrated graphics card doesn't even have DX8 or DX9 hardware support. As far as I'm aware, the Latitude X1 uses an Intel GMA 9xx series integrated card which does have hardware PS2.0 support but it's still a weak graphics card and of course it has the slower ULV processor compared to the 700m/710m.

My 710m doesn't get too hot. I have only seen it go about 60C once and that was running a game at relatively high settings. Normally it is about 40C.

And the fan is super quiet. Most of the time it is inaudible, and when it is its only a low purr. Nothing distubing like the engines in my i8600

Thanks for the advice, and trust me I have thought of the Sony's quite a bit, just by their style they are in a league of their own.

But if you read my original post, it needs to be a Dell for the reason stated.

My Compaq Presario with a P-M 1.6 plays C&C Generals very well, so they are the kind of games I am looking at playing. So I don't think a 710m @ 2.0Ghz should have a problem, but I am a bit more doubtful of the X1.

BTW MitchellO, your sig makes my IE stutter when moving up and down the page for some reason, its very jittery when on screen.

Sorry, I should have read your first post more clearly.

From what you've said, it sounds like the 700m/710m will suit you better - although its graphics card is basic it does have a lot of cpu horsepower plus the onboard optical drive would be the clincher for me. There's not much to know about the ULV processors, they are Pentium-m's which run on very low voltages which obviously gives better batterylife but not great performance.

how much ram do you have on ur computer?

its perfectly fine on mine (1GB)

I'd get the 710m. Sure its kinda thick for its size but it does not weigh too much more than X1. I would never get sony laptops: too expensive, too proprietary, and questionable quality. Besides after the crap Sony has been pulling lately, I don't trust them.

The 710m is a good choice. I have used photoshop on my 700m & everything is pretty smooth. I have a PM 1.7, 1.28GB RAM & 80GB 7200rpm HDD.

Although I'm not a fan of Sony in general, there's really nothing else out there that can properly rival the TX.

At its high price, there shouldn't be. I bought my loaded 700m for about $800. I will take that any day over a TX. Dell also has a better reputation than Sony.
