Sleep mode

Thread Starter
just got a powerbook last week and I was wondering if it is ok to just close the screen and leave it in sleep mode all the time. Is it safe to never turn the computer off? Thanks

sure, it's fine. r u referring to safe sleep (like windows' hibernate) or deep sleep? deep sleep doesn't fully shut down your system and will gradually drain your battery. safe sleep powers down your system after your OS has been cached to your harddrive.

i tend to have my iBook asleep between uses for weeks at a time. the only times i tend to reboot is w/ software installs which require it.

im not so sure if its deep sleep or safe sleep. How would I know? When u close the lid what sleep mode does it go into?

When you close the lid it keeps your RAM active and drains battery power. But the drain is so small that you can literally keep the machine asleep for at least a year before the battery would die.

I never shut my machine down, I just close the lid and put it aside when I'm not using it.

i'm not sure how the safe sleep is set up or activated as i haven't played w/ the newest PBs which take advantage of it. i'm guessing it's somewhere in the power settings, in your system preferences. i'll look into it.

I always sleep my powerbook - almost never shut it off - never worried about safe sleeping. If you haven't already, check out the Discussions section on the Apple support website - lots of good info there and lots of Mac-experts to help you out.
