4200rpm Hard Disk or 7200rpm Hard Disk?

I have a D500P from the UK but mine didnt come with a 7200rpm HDD and there wasnt an option to get one anyway. However I am considering buying a 7200rpm 60Gb disk but was wondering whether there are any significant performance increases. I have noticed that the laptop takes longer to install programs than my significantly slower desktop and I am convinced that this causes a severe bottleneck. I would just like to know if anybody else on this forum has upgraded from the 4200rpm to the 7200rpm?? And whether it is worth the extra £180.

Also, I take it that the 7.95 drivers off the Sager site for the Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo are suitable to upgrade my Radeon 9600 M10? The current version is 6.14.10.6368 25/6/2003 but doesnt say anything about Pro Turbo

I honestly don't really recognize much of a performance difference between a 7200 RPM (desktop) and a 4200 RPM (laptop). It would help gaming graphics loading times.

Second Q: The Pro/Turbo terminology is correct. Previously, the card was just called the MOBILITY M10, however with the new driverset that name is fixed to what it should be: Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo.

Between 4200 and 7200 is a SIGNIFICANT difference in performance in my experiences... 5400 vs. 7200 isn't that big, but 4200 is pretty slow (and quiet...).

myrkat when you say the 4200 is quiet does that mean the 7200rpm HDD is quite loud?
I already have plenty of noise issues such as the dvd/cd-r drive which is awefully loud but I dont think i could put up with a noisy HDD as well. The only 2.5in in the UK is the IBM/Hitachi Travelstar (7K60), anybody used it before?

Thanks for your help guys

YES. Both the 5400 and the 7200 are noticably LOUDER than the 4200 drives that I've used. They (the 5400/7200) also run HOTTER - giving off much more heat than the 4200, so if battery life / quiet / low-heat are a high priority, it's not a bad trade for the performance gains. BUT - if you need some speed, get at least a 5400 if not 7200, as the 4200's are noticably slower.

Thanks alot for your advice mate. I realised how much of a bootleneck it was when i installed identical programs on both my desktop and the laptop and it took double the time to install on the laptop which is a 2.8GHz P4 compared to a 1600+ Athlon.

Off subject slightly, has anybody installed the non fn key swap KBC/EC update 1.00.93 and noticed that the fans always go to top speed for a second before slowing down again, bit like when you first switch it on but slightly louder. It does it everytime the fan wants to go at a moderate speed but makes a high pitched screech which it didnt before.

I know this is an old thread, but if any others are still interested, there is actually an article on tomshardware.com about this. The 7200 rpm actually will help with battery time (I guess it has to work less).
