Wireless mouse

I'll be getting a 5660 sooner or later (whenever 3.06 w/ HT is available and not $300 more than the 2.8).... and I'm unfamiliar with infrared ports and wireless mice.

I see the 5660 has an infrared port.... will that support a wireless mouse? I went to check out wireless mice at the store the other day and they come with a sort of access point, base station that's just as big as the mouse itself! Is there anyway I could use that infrared port to talk to the mouse, or do I have to use the provided base station that comes with the mouse (if I did, I'd just get a wired mouse....).. Thanks!

I don't know if any wireless infrared mice exist at all, but in any case, they would most likely be too limited. Infrared requires a completely clear, direct line of sight, which can be very inconvenient in desks. That's why those other mice come with base stations. They need them to utilise a Radio Frequency (R/F) that can indeed travel even with an obstructed view.

Cheers.

Hehehe... no problem. If you're a gamer, though, Logitech makes some pretty good Wireless mice. This one is particularly has gotten rave reviews:

Ha, Roy, that mouse looks sweet! But it's not optical... Now that's I've used optical, I do not game without it. Last thing I need is a dirty mouse as I'm turning to shoot someone. "Oh that was BS my mouse got stuck!" "Ha ha!"

LOGITECH !!

I use an Logitech MX700(Wireless) on my desktop and an MX500(wired) on my laptop. They are by far the best mice I have ever owned. I switched to the MX700 from a MS Wireless Explorer and the difference was night and day. The MX700(and MX500) is much more sensitive to the small movements I need for gaming.

The MS Wireless was fine for windows but it went through batterys very quickly. They only lasted about 2.5 weeks and there was no way to turn the mouse off unless you removed the batterys. The MX700 is no better on battery life but it comes with rechargable batterys and a recharger that you can drop the mouse onto. If the batterys do not need to be charged then it will shut it off when you place it on the charger.

Just an opinion. =)

P.S. Oh and the colors on the MX500 and 700 match the standard 8887 colors(black and grey) perfectly. Looks like they were made for each other.

Wow, that Kensington's USB station is really small! I could go for a wireless mouse like that! What is that button on the side of the mouse.. the little gray one? I love my Microsoft Intellimouse that I've had for 3 years... (my hand is very used to it!) does MS make a mouse that has a tiny USB base station like that, that's any good and cheap? I only wanna spend like $30 tops. Thanks!

Beebster, why do you think the Kensington mouse is not optical? According to the specs on the page Roy provided:

DiamondEyeâ„¢ Optical Technology can be used on any surface and provides accurate tracking.
Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding? If it really is optical, I'll be getting one myself!

The right mouse for the right application

Just make sure you're not getting the Kingston for serious gaming. The Logitech MX series has an 800dpi resolution compared to a typical 400dpi on a regular mouse. Also I saw one like TC024 is showing you at Staples and it looks great for buisness/presentation applications (but not gaming). But there is also the option for EXTREME gamers (who don't care about optical) to get a Razor Boomslang 2000, its got a 2000dpi. I think its the sharpest out there, but as I said its not optical.

Are cordless mice allowed on planes ?

I have a problem where my logitech mouse caused radio interference with our baby phone. So if you have a baby phone then get a normal corded mouse .

Certain radio frequencies (like 2.4 GHz) are getting crowded because a lot of new devices (phones, Wi-Fi, mice, keyboards, etc.) are using them.

Cheers.

Yeah I think they'll let you use them on planes, but i still see little point of using a cordless mouse on a laptop. I think that on a desktop, it makes more sense because the tower is going to be a lot further away from you than the laptop will be. Yeah?

I mentioned the targus wireless optical, I think pctorque has it under his accessories, but I'm not sure. It has about 6 ft range, but it's a tiny mouse.

Is a good thread.

I think the button opens the lid where you store the usb station. I've ordered one. I'll let you know how it performs once I get it.

Has anyone tried this keyboard?

Speaking of MICE and input devices, has anyone given the EluminX Keyboard a try? Sort of reminds me of the Atari 400 membrane keyboard.

Just my $0.02 worth,
