Recording from s-video in

Ok im total nub on this recording/tuner stuff so heres the deal.

What I basically want to do is take some vhs tapes, play them in my vcr, and run a rca to svideo cable from my tv (or vcr) to my computer, and have it be stored on the computer so I can do what I want with it from there.

The cable I got works fine from going computer to tv, because I use it for watching movies, but I have WinDVD Recorder because I heard thats the best way to go, and I cant get it to do anything with it...

So is it just not possible this way or am I doing something wrong or just forgetting to do something?

any help appreciated.

*edit*
I also just tried WinDVR but it doesnt detect anything either, I changed my device to svideo and nothing happened, and now I cant get into the settings anymore : /

Must be something you are doing wrong, but its absolutely possible. Do you have the connections all set. You know you use the SVID IN not the SVID OUT. They are different. Other than that, it should be fairly routine. I am not sure about the WinDVD Recorder, how that works with the TV Tuner. Can you get any signal at all? Do you get any image from the VCR or for that matter, from any SVID input? Also, though it seams like a silly thing, make sure you are using the Record Out jacks on the VCR. I've found that many cases like this, its something so basic that you forget to check it.

ok well everythings in the right spot and now I can get it to show theres actually a signall, because now it says "Capture settings not supported by hardware" or something like that....which brings up something else, I dont actually have my tuner installed that came with my 8890 because I have 2 HD's so theres nothing in the hardware window for vid capture. Do I need to install it for it to work even in svid?

Yes I believe you need the tuner card installed as I believe the video capture hardware is built into it.

I used my 8886 to do the same thing and worked great. Remember S-Video doesn't have audio so you'll need an audio cable too.

Yep, without the TV Tuner hardware, there's nothing there to receive the signal. Sort of like hooking up your cable TV to a TV cabinet with no hardware in it.

By the way beakmyn, I love your quote on code writing. Actually, that could apply to nearly any effort that others will have to rely upon, but particularly owner's manuals and instructions. They always seem to leave out those "obvious" things that aren't so obvious to the rest of us.
