Surround Sound For a Laptop?

I was wondering, if I buy a 5.1 sorround sound system for my computer, does it require a special sound card? I'm planning to buy it for a Sony FRV37 model.

If the system has S/PDIF input, you're good. Otherwise, the speaker outputs are only good for 2.1, AFAIK.

Just remember, unless those are self-powered speakers, you may not hear much. A laptop generally doesn't have much power to spare for two speakers, much less 5.
