Linux vs Windows

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am thinking about getting a laptop and using Linux on it instead of Windows.
What software shall I use? Open Office?
I normally use the Office softwares (words, ppt, xl) and some others (Nero, mediaplayer, etc)?
No games, no extra.
I use laptop for working at home, presentation at clients.
I also have a Dell desktop for home use.

Also - how easy it is to transport files from Office to Open office (.ppt, etc)?
If I work on my presentation at home in open office, can I do the presentation at other peoples PC next morning?

Thanks,

Andras

I'd go with a dual boot until you feel comfortable with Linux

but yeah.. Openoffice substitutes Powerpoint, Word, and Excel perfectly..

You should try out the windows version and test all your doubts

Rather than repeating the same I'll just say "Seconded".

Download Knoppix, boot up onto a liveCD. Try out the environment. It'll look easy and all, but then try and install on a virtual machine (Use VMWare or something) on your windows machine, get the full feel of the OS. Its not something one can just jump into.

However, once you learn it, its worth it.

If you play a lot of Direct3D games then a dual boot is a no-brainer. Unless your only game is DoomIII which is OpenGL. In that case Linux will work just fine. I stick with XP because there are more apps that I like. However if Microsoft suddenly shut down tommorrow and no more Direct3D games were available I would have no problem switching over to Linux for my home PC's.
