Linux vs Windows - Page 3

ok guys how many linux 64-bit OS's are out in the market? which OS should I as a first time user go for?
Fedora Core 64bit is probably one of the more popular ones if you want a RPM-based distro.

My friends use VMware to run Linux on Windows. They say it works great.

The father of the project, Linus Torvalds, is a Finnish guy and he isn't a communist - to my knowledge. He is working at Transmeta, what I last heard some years back.

not even close.

it sounds like you're a total linux greenhorn, so my advice to you is start with 32-bit linux. its more complete, and easier to set stuff up (especially ati, nvidia drivers, and some media codecs).

That said, stay away from the big 3: Suse, Mandrake, Fedora. They all suck and and are not what they are cracked up to be. (i say that yet i have mandrake 2005 installed on my desktop)

My advice to you is grab Ubuntu Breezy (32 bit, although there is a 64 bit version available), or PCLinuxOS (32 bit only right now), they are both pretty light (compared to Fedora...one one install cd instead of 5) and they JUST WORK. Get used to it, play around with it, tweak it. When you think you're set. Grab yourself some Gentoo and have fun! After you install Gentoo if its not the fastest OS you have ever tried, I give you the permission to castrate me

I'm running SuSE 10.0 and it's going great. Actually I installed it since the post I had earlier in this thread about not finding a distro that supports all my hardware out of the box. That one does (well.. okay, haven't tried the media reader, but for some reason, it's not even working under Windows anymore...) so I'm very happy.

However for a beginner, I'd definitely suggest PCLinuxOS. I've heard great things about it and it's based on the Mandrake distro so you get your packaged installers instead of compiling everything from source.

chuck, can you get wifi working with suse? it works in ubuntu and gentoo for me but i cant get it in suse. im going to download 10.1 beta 4 on thursday though and give it another shot.

10.1 has a new beagle frontend for kde which is nice and its got a sexy new set of artwork.

Edit: abf, you do realize that linux was started by torvalds and a bunch of his friends right? safe to say they were all nerds...

eww! why?

just make sure that you compiled the modules properly, or try ndiswrapper if all else fails

because gentoo is now my new main OS. i need something to use on my "testing" linux part instead of dapper.(and yes, i was using dapper as my main OS until i got gentoo working right).

And i have intel wifi, it should work out of the box. the problem i had in gentoo was that i wasnt able to get it working using the firmware built into the kernel. i had to emerge the driver. i think suse only allows you to use the kernel one an the driver isnt available. pretty lame, but if it doesnt work in beta 4 ill file a bug report and it should be fixed before the final release. the suse devs are awesome that way.

i guess then i better report my sound not working, since 9.1 it didn't work, still doesnt! hell, 1/2 the other hardware doesn't work right either

maybe they should develop it on my lappy so it works better with it
