M40 Series CPU Upgrade Photos

I got my hands on a 770 2.13GHz processor and thought I would upgrade my girlfriend's M70-SF3 (750 1.86GHz).

I have seen a lot of notebooks and it has always been tough/dangerous/expensive to get into the notebook to simply swap out the processor.

The M40 series has always been one of my favorites.

4 screws as all I needed to swap it out.

one screw to get past the cover

there it is. You can also see the entire copper heatsink/fin assembly

3 screws hold down the heatsink onto the processor

The heatsink comes straight up. eww...lots of thermal grease

turn the release screw on the processor holder and take her out

clean up the heatsink and make sure everything is clean. use alcohol and a lint free cloth. I used Artic Silver 5 and reversed the process.

Turned on the notebook and bingo...everything works our perfectly.

The absolute easiest job I have ever done.

For those of you with the M40, I would consider doing this to change out the thermal grease to Artic Silver 5. I would imagine you could get some lower temps.

Good pixs!

I wish mine was that easy to get to!

BTW, that is one heck of a notebook you have!

Nice job YP5. I remember somebody asking about doing the same thing some time back in a Tecra A4. I guess it would be exactly the same process, wouldn't it?

not 100% sure...but all the info I have seen and my personal experience outlines small decreases. bottom line, it is better than regular grease.

It seems like a bit of a task just to switch the thermal paste for a few degrees difference. But if you were going in for another reason (like changing the CPU) then I think applying AS5 would be worthwhile, since you're going to have to apply some thermal paste anyway. Just my thoughts on that.

Many Toshibas have a CPU that is easily accesible, and those can be upgraded by anyone. Here is a list of the top of my head of models that are easily replacable:
1405, 1415, 1805, 1905, 1955, 1135, 2405, 2415, 2435, 2455, A15, A25, A35, A45, M15, P15, P25. There is more, especially newer ones that I haven't listed. Arctic Silver will help, as long as the heatsink/fan are kept clean.

Bummer! I'm not looking forward to taking mine apart to clean the dust off the heat sink and cpu.

Protosh, how long do you think it will take me to do that job?
I'm gonna wait until you send the lid so I can do the job at the same time...

it's not tough, most of the screws are the same which makes it easier. Including the bezel, it will prob. take you an hour, if you've never done it before.
Yeah took me about an hour including reassembly since it was the first time taking it apart. To take it completely apart it was around 42 screws But that includes stuff you dont have to take out like the dvd drive and hd.

What, if any, would be a worthwhile CPU upgrade from a P4 2.8HT in my P15S409? Would just a RAM upgarade make it better? It has 512 I think now.

Why? I've a Qosmio F20-149 and thought of a cpu upgrade.

And hello...first posting

I would like to check the thermal compound on my CPU and GPU - some AS might make this a cooler notebook. Has anyone cracked an F20/25 open?

Thanks OP!

ill take a look at a F20....it all depends on the location of the CPU and how easy it is to get at.
