DVD-R Survey/Questionaire

Have any of you guys with the DVD-RW combo drive ever had problems playing games?

I've installed four games -- Max Payne2, Homeworld2, C&C: Generals and Call of Duty and each time it installs perfectly, but when I go to run the game it spins the cd rom hard and four minutes later I get this: "Could not authenticate CD in given time: Retry/Cancel?"

I've tried searching for drivers to update the device with but I've found nothing on Alienware's site.

I'm using the very latest Omega drivers...

But video cards wouldn't have anything to do with authenticating the cd, wouldn't they??

I don;lt think it has any thing to do with video drivers, you have any emulate daemon programs runnning?

do you have any external drives?

No external drives whatsoever.

Emulate daemon programs? How would I check, just control alt delete and scan through my processes?

does it make any angry sounds when it's trying to start up? Also does your dvd playback work ok. If you can watch a movie, you shouldnt be having a problem with the drive itself. Check to see if the cd's are cracked...if they were all shipped together they could all have the same damage. I've had a fully cracked cd install, but it wouldn't play (took me forever to see the crack). Good luck.

DVDs playback fine. Every so often the drive makes some "angry" noise, especially with my cdr discs that I burned.

None of my retail gaming cds are scratched, however.

Sounds like you might have a faulty drive. Give AW tech support a call or go to the AW customer support forums and post your problem there.
