I_am_an_idiot!!!!!

Good God...

I took apart my 9300 today to apply some AS5 to the CPU/GPU, and when reassembling the GPU heatsink, I over-tightened one of the 4 Torx screws that hold the heatsink onto the card. Went just a bit too far and "SNAP!" The screw broke off in the threaded hole in the backplate.

I'M SUCH AN IDIOT!!!! :

Reassembled it, and held my breath as I hit the power button...booted up fine, but now idles about 2-4 degrees warmer than before (sitting at 54C as I type this)!! Ran RTHDRIBL for about 20 minutes, and the highest it went was 61C, so I think I'm OK, for now. Time will tell if that loose corner comes looser...

As far as I know, you can't just buy a heatsink for these cards, right? It's a package deal, with the whole card? Anyone ever try to buy just one of the screws? LOL

The moral of the story: Don't over tighten the Torx screws!!!!!

I thought you can't overtorque those screws? Hmmm I guess I need to watch out when I do AS2 on my GPU.

Sadly, yes you can. Use caution!! They are spring-loaded, but not idiot-proof!

Ha, I broke #2 on the cpu heatsink, so now 3 and 4 don't tighten all the way either. Oh well, still 4 degrees cooler (1.6@2.13) than my 1.86... weird, I know (though I did apply AS5).

Medic... this is just the perfect twist of fate to force you to order a 7800gtx so you can sleep easier at night knowing that your heatsinks are properly bolted down. =)

Not to jack the thread, but uh, is the cpu heatsink what I'd need to replace if that 2nd screw isn't tightening? (I mean you turn it forever, and it never tightens... even with body-weight type pressure heh).

Man, BELIEVE ME, that has been in the back of my mind ALL DAY!! Especially with people getting them so cheap. Maybe it was subconsciously on purpose? Shhhh... Don't tell my wife...

Heh, I'm willing to bet you'll get it for $269.25 like I did today

Those CPU heatsink screws go into threaded holes under the motherboard. I imagine one of those holes is stripped out. I don't know if they're a part of the bottom chassis piece or not, as I didn't remove the motherboard, but I'd imagine that's what would need replacing.

That deal is soooo tempting, but the thing is, this card is still running!!! Hard to justify the $$$ when it's still working fine (so far), especially right after Chri$tma$.

Medic... tomorrow you're going to need to create and bizarre display error on your laptop that you can show to your wife. Then call up Dell (fake it) and then make the last thing you say (in case you're overheard) "ok, well let me call you back after I talk to my wife". Then go up and say "honey... they offered me a great upgrade offer when I called for my warranty replacement. They said that the card I have is out of stock for a while and since it is they'll let me upgrade to the 600$ card for only 250$ plus tax/shipping. Would you mind me ordering the upgrade so I can have my laptop running properly again soon? I less-than-three you!!"

It'll work like a charm. She'll say yes... you give her a "promise to mow the yard right when you ask next time" card and then you give her some thank you bumpin'!!! Works everytime. =)

OK, so the plan is to OC the card till it artifacts, then make "the call." Right? Hmmmmm... You guys are such a bad influence!

Or in my case...

1) Look at bank statement (try not to pass out)
2) Determine if bills > available
3) If so, wipe sweat off forhead
4) Remember about some obscure check I wrote, then frantically see if it already cleared...
5) Cleared!
6) Find a goodie and purchase!

Correct... that will work just fine. After you have achieved your "defect" just follow the script and all will be well. =)

I grew up to other kids parents calling me the spawn of satan... because they didn't realize how corrupt their children already were... and I was just making available what they asked for. >=)
