Sager UXGA screen inferior? - Page 2

I've put my sager next to a friends 8200 with the ultrasharp and he was pissed that he paid so much more...His had better viewing angles but nothing else noticbly better. INCLUDING the color...we did side by side tests with tons of pictures and graphics files and I saw no banding on either. As far as the 1600x1200 font issue, run xp pro with cleartype and 125dpi (or larger) fonts and large icons and you're set. Takes em to around 1280x1024 size and you still have the sharpness of the higher res. screen. Oh yeah..and cleartype ROCKS!

Nice job on the comparison. This was what I was waiting for to see and the results I pretty much expected.

eighteen_psi> Did you notice if the blacks were blacker on the ultrasharp? The ultrasharp LCDs are supposed to have a better contrast ratio and thereby richer blacks. Having a greater viewing angle also helps with this - so your screen doesn't look gray if you're not precisely on the right angle.

I didn't go in thinking about that but I can check it out next time he's in town. Then again, it didn't stand out to me. The blacks on mine are pretty impressive compared to other lcd's i've seen...another friend has some sony 17 incher for his box and it fails to impress after using my sager...blacks are about the same (its a lot brigher tho) and its viewing angles are far superior...then again, he paid $800 for it...I paid $1500 for my LCD and it came with a computer Also, i've mentioned it before, but the uxga rocks for other reasons..for isntance a dead pixel on a 15" uxga is TINY!. Theres one stuck green on his sony and it sucks...you can see it shine from across the damn room. My sager has one...stuck blue and without a nose-to-the-screen inspection its impossible to see.

Also forgot to mention...while I think you can adjust it a lot, the ultrasharp on batteries is about as bright as a flashlight without batteries. Perhaps thats a major reason the dell gets the battery life.

Thanks eighteen_psi. Although, unless he doesn't have his power management installed properly, when I just pulled the plug on my co-worker's ultrasharp 8200, there was no change in display brightness whatsoever.
Well 'properly' is subjective I guess....certainly brightness has a huge effect on battery life so I guess it was set that way by default from dell or something...I have no idea. Just noticed that when he pulled the plug, I could hardly see it 'over' the lighting in the office (which wasn't that bright) and was 10 feet overhead.

I had the Dell 8200 with the UltraSharp screen for about a week about a week ago and when you pulled the plug, it definitely lost some of its brightness, but I wouldn't call it too dark or hard to see. This is obviously something you can set in the bios/control panel. The dual batteries on that thing lasted about five hours. Come to think of it, I kind of miss that system now (I sold it because of the banding problems with the ATI 9000). In my never-ending search for a new laptop, I'm stuck between going for a Sager, the Toshiba 5205-s703, or buying another Dell since the banding problem will be addressed in the next video card bios revision. *sigh*

24 bit screen into the 5660?

So I want the 24-bit screen that the 8886 has, but I want the guts of the 5660. Anyone know if this is possible?

Anyone got a bead on whether the next 5660 (5680?) will have a 24 bit screen?

Lastly- that ultra sharp tech that dell and some others are touting.. does anyone know if that LCD tech is coming to the Sager line anytime soon?

Why do I ask? I do photoshop and can't always have a CRT around when I'm doing it.

Thanks all!

Are the viewing angles really that bad? It would be nice, though. And I think they both have 32 bit capability, but i'm probably wrong about that.

"Ask beeb."
I hope the "ask beeb" thing isn' t being used bitterly...

In any case, the viewing angle isn't bad at all compared with other LCD screens. Black looks quite black on this 8886... lol, at least I can't imagine it being any more black. The color on the 8886 is great... I haven't seen the 5660, but from everything I hear, it looks as good as the ultrasharp and any color banding that happens on it happens on the ultrasharp as well.

You know me, I'd never use it bitterly. I was simply quoting the guy who said "ask beebster." Sorry

ultrasharp is 16 mil colors too. I wish sager would put that on the 5660, even though I won't be able to tell a difference.

Oh no need for apologies :-) I was just asking cuz I didn't want anyone feeling apathy or anything of the sort. We're all sagerites :-)

The difference between the ultrasharp and regular uxga is much more noticeable than the 18bit vs 24bit display. However, I think most people share your sentiments with regards to 18bit vs 24bit. They'd like to have the technically superior monitor even though 99% probably couldn't tell the difference between the two in side by side comparisons

Agreed... Lol, even if there was no difference between the 2.66 processor and the 2.8, I'd prefer to have the 2.8 just because it's the 2.8... I don't know why that is. :-) Gotta love technology, lol.
