Need a recomendation on a good router... (My Linksys just isn't cutting it anymore)

Comcast just upgraded the speed in my area to 6meg downstream and it works great...

My only problem is, I only see these speeds if I am connected via Cat5 cable. If I use wireless, my speed is nearly a quarter of that... 1.8meg was best.

My router is my trusty old Linksys BFEW11S4 v.2 and it does not support 802.11g, but despite that, I don't know why my router would see such a signal drop since I am roughly five feet away from it atm. My laptop has a on board Broadcom wireless a/b/g chipset and gets great signal but crappy speeds from my old router.

Despite running the latest firmware updates etc, it still sucks. So its time to replace it. Anyone get good speeds via WiFi using Comcast?

I think you will only see top speeds on an unsecured wireless connection. I noticed the same thing with both my dLink wireless G routers. I use the wired connection when at my desk, get ~5.5 Mb instead of ~3 Mb wireless.

I used to have comcast 6meg service and when I used Bearshare I consistently got 6-7 meg download speed over wireless with my D-Link DI-624. There is something wrong with your wireless.

Try a different channel on the wireless settings on the router.

Check to make sure you are up to date with the firmware.

encryption and other security settings may also slow packets going wireless. Try without as a test

If you have an internal network, test its speed through the router. 1.8Mbps seems a little low for a 802.11b router unless it does encryption or other addidional things. I have the same router and get LAN file transfer speeds close to the theoretical ~ 9.5Mbps

I tried pretty much everything down to getting the latest firmware update and completely hard reseting the router and running without encryption etc. Changed channels around, you name it...

I think it's just time to buy a modern router. I had this sucker since 2001 and while it's a champ, I would hate to have to retire it just for the sake of getting my wireless speeds up to snuff. Wifi to lan (PC to PC on internal network is slow as well reaching only a quarter of it's speed shown in the network monitor in the task manager)

Guess it's time just to buy a new router (that doesn't suck, they are made so darned cheap these days.)

i think it's time to introduce you to a Pre N router.

great reviews all the way around.

Belkin is by far the easiest, user-friendly networking system i've ever used.

some of their older hardware were so-so, but the new Pre N's are crazy fast.

cheers.

I have one of these and love it. The speed is great and the range blows everything else outta the water.

I also have the Pre-N router with the wireless card for my i9300 and it rocks. I also just bought another Belkin Pre-N for my bro. It's incredibly simple to set up (as long as you have some tech know-how.)
