3GB Switch in boot.ini

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have 3 gig of ram in my unit. Because my FEA apps seemed to be running out of memory, I tried invoking the 3gb switch in the boot ini. This stopped the problem with the program running out of memory, but invoking the switch turned off my Nvidia card.

Is there a work around for this or what am I doing wrong. If remove the 3GB switch and restart the unit, the Nvidia card returns.

Also when I try to disable hyperthreading the unit will not reboot.

Any work a round for that.

Thanks,

The threeG thing no idea. To disable HT you need to nuke it in the bios and then either reload or attempt a repair. Either way not pretty.

Not sure about the 3GB switch. I've read that some people have issues with it and some don't. I've also read that setting it to 2.6 or 2.7 instead of 3 works better.

What FEA code/solver are you using? Is it supported on XP64? I have dual boot mine with XP Pro and XP64 just for FEA and it works really well.

For the HT, I believe that there is a way to turn it off without reinstalling you OS. I believe there's a registry setting (or maybe a windows setting) that you change then reboot your system and then turn it off in the bios. Do some searching on this before reinstalling your OS. Maybe search on the NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS system variable in the environment variables??

I am using Algor MES for my FEA. I haven't loaded the Windows 64 onto my Sager yet. I am running the 64bit version on my Desktop WorkStation and am pretty happy with it. How difficult was it to set up your sager with a dual boot from XP Pro to X64? I would be interested.

Thanks,

Yes, it's very easy. Run a back-up first (of course). Then create a seperate partition for XP64. I don't if that's necessary, but it will make things a lot easier and keep it organized for you. Then put in the CD and install it on the newly created partition. After it's installed the boot.ini file will automatically be updated and you'll be able to choose which OS you'd like to boot into upon starting your laptop. You can change the boot.ini file manually or through the Start up and Recovery section of system properties if you like. This will allow you to change the default OS that your computer boots into as well as how much time you have to make a selection before it boots to the default.

HTH.

BTW, does Algor have a 64bit version yet? We use a few different packages here. PTC has a 64bit version of Pro/Mechanica and it runs great. I've had very good succes with it. The Nastran version we run will have a 64bit version released within the next two months. I can run the 32-bit version in XP64, but I don't see an advantage to it.

Yes, Algor does have a 64bit version for the Linear Static modules. I am not sure about the MES software yet. I am embarrased to say that I am running beta versions of Algor Version 19 right now and am not sure as to what all is in the current version.

I am using alibre as my solid modeler right now. At the time that I switch my desk top from 32 to 64 bit I didn't know that Alibre would not work in a 64 bit environment. So now I am doing all of my modeling on my Sager and then transferring the step files to my desktop. Such is life!
