can I use nvidia drivers??

Everyone we got a new XPS 600 in the family and I am thinking about reformatting to get rid of all the Dell bloatware and speed things up. Can I just reinstall with the Windows XP recovery disk and then add the latest drivers from nVidia?? I have the P4 3.4EE with a single 7800GTX in the SLi mobo. Which chipset driver would I use, the nForce4 Intel or the nForce4 AMD/Intel X16? Do I need a audio driver or is there one in the chipset drivers already? I will use the 81.98 video drivers also. The Dell tech that I talked to said that I should use the X16 chipset driver, but I don't know if I trust him? Also, someone told me that I can not use these and have to use the Dell chipset drivers because of the raid settings or something?? What do you guys think I can do?? Thanks.

not an expert, but I would use the Dell drivers from their site. Laptop's are often specialized equipment. so when go to the dell download site and download all the drivers and updates for your laptop and either burn them to a disk or put them on a resource you can access with a fresh install of windows, like a USB drive. After reinstalling windows install the chipset and video drivers from dell first. Then install other drivers.

The XPS 600 is not a laptop, it's a desktop. I know that I can use the Dell drivers, what I want to know is if I can use the nVidia chipset drivers instead.

Yes - you can use nVidia drivers with any nVidia desktop board. In fact, its preferred.

Here's what you need to do:

Make sure you're installing Windows from the Operating System CD. Most times, Dell will not send this to you by default, so if you don't have it, you'll need to call them or use Dell Chat and tell them to send you a Windows XP CD and a Resource CD. They will usually have it to you in two days max.

Okay, now for your questions. Yes, you should use Nvidia's video drivers. I would never use Dell's video drivers, which are usually old, stripped down versions of Nvidia's drivers anyway.

Your Chipset driver is something different. You can get that from Dell's website or the Resource CD. The Dell Windows XP CD should have your RAID controller drivers slipstreamed on it already. Chipset drivers for your system are here.

When installing Windows, do NOT have the network cable connected to your cable or DSL modem. If you do, Windows will automatically download generic video drivers and other drivers.

So, after you format, install drivers in this order:

Chipset
Video driver
Sound card
Remaining drivers

I hope this helps.

Yes, but can I use the nVidia chipset drivers instead of the Dell ones?? The choices for the nVidia chipset drivers are the nForce4 Intel or the nForce4 AMD/Intel X16 ??????

In that case, I would use the Dell drivers, since Dell motherboards are usually a little differernt than the retail versions.
