Partition reformat question

Thread Starter
this is almost more of a general question but you guys probably have done this more so i ask here.

i am fooling around with linux, and i want to reinstall windows onto a smaller partition (not just shrink with partition magic) since it is too big and its getting about time for a reformat. my question is this: i have a lot of programs installed onto my external hard drive. i also have other apps on the c drive. i've heard that i can create another partition and relocate all my apps there, and then reformat windows without losing my apps. will this also work for the apps already on the external?

also, i have certain files that i want to be accesable to both my windows and linux partitions (music, source code, text, etc) how do i format the partition to do this?

for your uses, here is a good partition layout:

(assuming your drive is 60gb...adjust accordingly)

/dev/hda1 25gb NTFS for windows
/dev/hda2 10gb FAT32 for shared docs
/dev/hda3 24gb RaiserFS for Linux /
/dev/hda4 1gb SWAP
/dev/hda5 128mb /boot

anyway....goodluck!

(Assuming you are asking about Windows above)
This is not as simple as it sounds. I am sure it would be possible, but your best bet is to reinstall those apps when you reformat. The reason being is most of them will have locations being pointed to in the registry from their installation. It would be possible to change these by hand, but you are probably going to be talking about a LARGE amount of work if you know what you are doing, and an INSANE amount that may screw up a couple of installs if you dont.

In all honesty, plan on reinstalling all software when you reformat your OS.
