The reason I ended up on this string is because my father-in-law is having the same problem with his Dell Latitude. The explanation he got from his computer expert was as follows:

"The power supply of the computer sometimes retaines residual electrical energy which interferes with the "wake up" process usually initated by the opening of the laptop lid. The solution would be to unplug the laptop, and remove the battery for approximately 30 seconds"

This sounds like *bunk* to me as I have had a Dell Laptop for over 7 years and although I have had to wait a long time sometimes for "wake up" especially out of " Hibernation Mode" but never had it where it just would wake up. However I have had it where because I use and "extended desktop" function and that after I have undocked, I have had to use the "Funtion+F8" key combination to switch back to LCD screen only.

Any comments are welcome.

My problem (if I remember right) was a video driver install issue.

I've had this problem ever since I got my I9300 a few years ago. I've tried dozens of fixes with no success, but discovered a pretty simple work-around that works every time. All you have to do is push the "play" button on the front of your laptop which will revive it every time without fail. The only drawback is that this also will start "Media Center". All I do then is to close that app and I'm back to work with no problems.

I hope this helps,
Ciao

I have the HP Pavilion dv9000, I had the same problem, it wouldn't wake from hibernate, I contacted HP support and they told me to remove he power cord and the battery then hold the power button for about a minute, this is to discharge all stored power from all components, then replace the battery then try starting. It worked no problem.
The reason they gave is that hibernate and sleep should only be used for upto three hours at a time any longer causes components to become overcharged and may result in this happening, and over time can cause damage to the mobo.
The moral is turn it off when not using.

Momentarily press the power button on a Dell

I was having this same problem I thought and then found a posting on another forum that said just push the power button on a Dell and it wakes up. I tried it and it works great. I pushed basically all the other buttons and nothing worked and for the first couple times and actually did the forced power down and reboot thing. Oh well , live and learn. Maybe this will be helpful or maybe not, just thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

Whatever drivers you are using try something different if Dell -> Try ATI Catalyst if Catalyst or Forceware try Dell etc. In my case it was Dell drivers that caused problems with my Latitude D610.
Hi Snooze
I just installed NT on a Dell Latitide D610, and all the software I want, but it won't hibernate nor go to sleep despite setting it to do these things in the power management software. Therefore I liked your advice above to that other guy.

But I'm a novice so I have a question.....I downloaded ATI Catalyst 9-12_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe, but
(a) do I just run it and it replaces the previous driver?
(b) do I get chance to back out if things don't go well?
(c) how will I know what driver(s) I replaced if I want to reinstall the old one(s)?
(d) a guy on a Tek-Tips Forum is telling someone else they'll also need to install .Net Framework upgrades - is this correct?

Many thanks, Magdalena

. It is always best if you remove the previous driver first. Use Driver Sweeper to clean it as well before installing the new driver.

. Create a restore point on your system first and foremost, in case of something goes wrong.

. Device manager: take a look at the properties, it will tell you the current driver version.

. It is best to have Windows up to date, period.

cheers ...

The capacitors on the motherboard will retain the energy and hold up things. Taking out the battery and holding down the power button to drain them is sort of like the neat little memory eraser they used on Men In Black. It makes them forget the information they were holding and then things should boot up normally. However, I'm still having the problem of my laptop not coming out of Sleep (it's November 1st, 2011) and I have yet to find a legit solution so I just leave my monster plugged in and no Sleep or Hibernate. This is a gaming laptop so really, it won't last more than 2 hours without being plugged in regardless. But it's not the point, I like to know about these sort of things for future reference, so I remain in search of a solution.
